I have just found a little bug - not really causing a huge issue, but probably should be fixed.

If you have an (uncredited) actor in your variations, and choses another name as the "common name", it still populates the "Credited as" field for the uncredited actor!

Kind of strange that it does, as the field is greyed out in normal editing when uncredited is selected.

If you go in to edit the role of the person in question, the field is greyed out and the "credited as" name no longer appears - save the the profile and the problem disappears.

I tried with all spelling tolerance settings, but still the report would not show David Campbell vs. Dave Campbell. David Campbell has several sound re-recording mixer credits and he is also credited several times as Dave Campbell.

Any possibility to increase the spelling tolerance or include a list of common first name variants, eg.
Robert - Bob - Bobby
Steve - Steven - Stephen
Edward - Ed - Teddy - Ted
David - Dave
etc.

Hi,
I have vista and got the same error message as sugarjoe, to fix it I ran the uninstall first, as the file actually gets loaded it just just doesn't get registered. Then once that had finished successfully, I ran the install.cmd as an administrator and it installed successfully, this error message appears to be related to some of the new security things in Vista.

Does not work for me. It looks like the NVPlugin can't be found now. Does it have to be in a specific folder?

No, it doesn't. But it can only be found by DVD Profiler if the registration (install.cmd) was successful. Unfortunately, I have no experience with Vista. I do know that there are some changes to system security, but regsvr32 should work, because Vista has a compatibility flag (WRP mitigation) for it.

I had the same problems. What I did was run "command prompt" as administrator, browsed to the folder that contained nvplugin.dll and ran "regsvr32 nvplugin.dll". That did the trick!
It seems to be the extra security in Vista that's stopping the install.cmd from running properly.

Thanks that did the trick reason being that the plugin is stored on my D drive and while the registration process only the C drive is looked up.

And another point:
Having run the program for the fist time it is amazing how many name variants it came up with, mainly due to the inconsistent usage of popular 'middle name' field. Again, seeing all this and having the problems with asian names in mind, the only solution to me would be a single name field, but that's just me...

I love this plugin.  I just used it to correct about a dozen entries.  Now for a plugin that does the research for you ( I use IMDB and Wikipedia and google search to verify said person is in all movies listed)

There are a couple of additions that would really help.
1. The ability to flag profiles that you have edited.
2. The option to input your own common name. I'm finding variations where all displayed are incorrect.

Great ideas both. I'm currently implementing it. But I'm pondering in which order to put the input fields: First/Middle/Last as they appear in the report or First/Last/Middle as they appear in DVDProfiler's Add/Edit Member dialog boxes. The latter one didn't ever make much sense to me. Yes, you can save one tab keystroke if there is no middle name, but it is confusing, at least to me.

Sorry, but won't happen any time soon.

I like the idea, but that goes way beyond spelling tolerance. Without much thinking, I could come up with a fairly long list for English names alone, now throw some other popular languages in the mix... I see currently no way to do this without a severe performance impact. I keep it on the "maybe someday" list, though.

Couple variants that it doesn't seem to be catching are Steve/Steven and Ann/Anne.  Steve might not be workable, from what you just said, but Ann should be, yes?

Matthias, a suggestion when you do a right click on a name have it do a google search or some other kind of web search on the name to help determine which variant may be the real common name.

Helpful, but everyone still has their opinion on if you chose the right common name.  I withdrew two on my submissions to reresearch the common name choices I made.

Fantastic plugin, thanks for that! Small bug, IMHO: Kenny Griswald / Kenny Griswold is not detected as a variant....

While Invelos was down, two updates of the Name Variants Plugin have been released and were announced on the other site (which shall never be named again )

The most recent version is 2.5.3.

If you have a previous version installed, you can simply overwrite the old files. Just make sure, you have closed DVD Profiler, Name Variants, and any report. To use the new features, you have to re-create the Name Variants Report.

Version 2.5.3 - Small bugfix
  • Jumping from a DVD in the report to DVD Profiler 3 now clears filters if necessary.

  • Version 2.5.2 - Bugfixes and enhancements:
  • Can flag DVDs changed during a common name update.

  • Custom common names can be entered.

  • Prompts before overwriting existing Credited As data.

  • Fixed: Credited As field no longer populated for uncredited entries.

  • Provides better error context if loading from the Live database fails.

  • Download at http://www.geocities.com/goodguy_dvdpro/

Thanks a lot for this plugin goodguy!! I have quite a few spelling errors in my db, and just the thought of going through all the titles "manually" gave me the creeps

One thing I've seen when using it for the crew members is that when a "cast as" name is used for the crew, the colour coding doesn't work anymore (the name is written all in black). Once I delete the "cast as" part, the colours are back again.
I guess this is more a DVD Profiler bug than a plugin one, but would it be possible not to save the old name in the "cast as" field? Could it be made as a choice to the user when launching the report?
    Thanks a lot!
