This is a stupid rule regarding not using IMDB for cast and crew, why is this?  I'm not contributing anymore as I'm not going to sit there and type every cast list for every episode of every TV series without cast, House Season 2 can remain castless, even though its perfect, and its perfect in my database! Lets vote to overule this badly thought out rule!

I personally think it is a good rule... and want it to stay...

First of all...
I have seen... by doing cast correctly from the end credits... just how inaccurate IMDB actually is... and I want accurate information in my database!

Also...
No matter how this vote comes out... it is useless as the owner of the database has repeatedly said that IMDB or any other 3rd party database info is NOT allowed into the cast/crew lists because it opens him up to lawsuits. And I for one would much rather go through the trouble of doing it right in the first place then to risk losing the online database all together.

Nbren:

It may be stupid to YOU, but there are legal reasons for it. This is DVDProfiler not IMDb, if you like it so much you can track your DVD through their website for free for up to 10, 000 title. I suggest you do that or get over it. The Rules are for DVDProiler users as a whole and not Nbren007. Or you could develop your own database and pay IMDb the licensing fee, or just take the legal risk. The Rule as Pete noted is not going to change.

I think we should add "Starting new IMDB threads" in the "Bannable offenses" section of the forum rules.

nbren,

People can argue back and forth regarding the quality of the IMDB data (mostly bad) or how it may make it easier to do cast/crew entries, etc., but there's one fact you're missing.

IMDB does NOT WANT US to use them.  They will sue any commercial product/database that uses their data.  The rule to not use IMDB is to protect this product from legal issues.

Read through IMDB's FAQ yourself.  Ken would need to pay a licensing fee in order to use the data in the IMDB.  He does not wish to do this, so you cannot use data from IMDB.

It's your decision to contribute or not. That's o.k. But IF you contribute you have to follow the rules. The ban on using third databases is not a kind of harassment to annoy users. You must understand that using third party databases could involve Invelos into legal actions. Consider this procedure as a chance to keep the database clear from crap!

(At the end of this thread you will realize, that my answer was the gentlest)

First of all - IMDB is (as several people have pointed out already) a highly inaccurate database.
Second of all - Invelos will get sued if they encourage contributors to "steal" information from other third party databases.

If you don't believe its inaccurate, print out the cast and crew for a movie, sit down in your couch, press play and jump to the end credits and start ticking off how many correct listings you get - believe me, it won't be many...

Use IMDB as a notebook if you will, but this database is - and hopefully always will be - built by people taking time to actually verify what they put down....

If you don't like it - don't contribute - someone will eventually do it for you....

Take it from someone that has done alot of TV contributions, don't trust IMDB's cast role list!  It is no more accurate than the rest of their data.  They constantly switch role names for actors or the role name is just plain wrong.

If you don't want to take the time to figure out the roles for the cast if no role is provided in the credits, then just leave it blank.  There is no requirement that a role name be entered if one isn't there.  With the contribution system, just leave the role blank so someone else can later contribute it with the necessary documentation.

That is what I have been doing as of late... as I am finding more and more that I don't trust most sites with the role info. So I just been leaving the role blank for the most part.

And yes I do realize that tv sets is a lot of work to be done. But what I do on that... is go at my own pace... nothing says it has to all be done within any certain time limit. I been just submitting 1 disc worth at a time. Of course I only do the child profiles myself... as I don't keep the cast info in the parent profile.

I think Invelos should create an easily accessible FAQ in the forums section with these kind of questions:

- Why can't we use IMDb
- When is there a CD Profiler
etc.

I know there is a section under the Support section but not many people seem to look there before asking questions here.
