Hi Invelos,

In 2006 The Netherlands introduced a new rating '9' (starting with the movie "Kruistocht in spijkerbroek, for instance UPC 8713053220074).

Currently it is not possible to enter this rating, you can fill in '9' but after saving the field is blank again.

Could this rating be added to the drop-down list?

Regards,
Erik

Hi again,

I did not do my homework properly: it was introduced in 2004 for Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban...

This rating is not a standard (yet). You can use 12 instead.

I think "official" is not relevant here.

The Nicam/Kijkwijzer (www.kijkwijzer.nl, only Dutch) is the organisation controlling this, it is not a government issue anymore.

The '9' rating is currently
- used by the Nicam/Kijwijzer
- present on their website as search criteria
- movies are currently assigned this rating
- the rating and accompanying logo has been used since 2004 on DVD covers.

I would think the DVD profiler has to do with cataloging DVDs, not with the precise status of a rating.

To me it makes sense that if a rating is assigned to a DVD-release and printed on the box and registered in the official national database than that is the rating that should appear in DVD profiler, whatever its precise 'status'.

(Yeah, it's nitpicking and unimportant. But than again entering whatever detail of a DVD movie into a computer database might be considered nitpicking and unimportant by the majority of people :-) )

Kijkwijzer is inconsistent in its use of the 9 rating. While it is present in their search criteria, it's not listed in the top bar on their home page or in their explanation of the various categories they use.

BTW, the Kijkwijzer website is NOT in Dutch only. Here's the English version.

My point of view: whereas the present status of the 9 rating is unclear, the Wikipedia link (thanks, AESP_pres!) claims it's expected to become a standard rating in the course of 2008. If there's any truth in that (the news section of the Kijkcijfer website doesn't mention it), it's best for DVDP to be prepared. So yes, I would recommend integrating it into DVDP (especially since it is starting to be used already).

If this new rating is added, the '12' rating has to be changed to '9/12'. Please read this topic and
my post in it to see why.

Martin, wouldn't that depend on whether or not something like an Adult checkbox as requested elsewhere will be implemented?
While I agree with you that the Dutch 16 rating is not the same as an adult rating, a rating of 9/12 would be a bit pointless as well.

No, it depends on the number of levels and their relation to each other, like you can see below. A checkbox would not change this and is unnecessary which goodguy explained here.

Quoting goodguy:
Quote:
<Locality Unk='2' Code='9' Name='Netherlands'>
  <Rating Code='1' Name='AL'/>
  <Rating Code='2' Name='6'/>
  <Rating Code='3' Name='12'/>
  <Rating Code='4' Name='16'/>
</Locality>

...

<Locality Unk='1' Code='0' Name='United States'>
  <Rating Code='1' Name='G'/>
  <Rating Code='2' Name='PG'/>
  <Rating Code='3' Name='PG-13'/>
  <Rating Code='4' Name='R'/>
  <Rating Code='5' Name='NC-17'/>
</Locality>

I'm not so sure it's unnecessary if the current system is incapable of properly dealing with an added rating without leading to complications with regard to what's adult and what's not.

Then again: I do not believe in a rating system for deciding what's adult and what's not in the first place. IMHO adult is a genre, not a rating. So maybe we just have different views on this issue.

Who needs ratings indeed, especially so fine-tuned? But as a minimum, Kijkwijzer should have consulted the users of DVD Profiler before introducing a new rating!

That's right and that genre is available and selectable for parental control. It just should be renamed to Erotic, Porn or Sex.

I've added the 9 rating as an optional selection to my layout.

the problem with calling Adult = sex is that would mean that violent films would be excluded. You need to use a name which encompasses both types.

(which is why they probably call it Adult..)
