As for the cover, you stated YOUR opinion, there is no objective method in which to evaluate the Cover scans. You think it is right and at least two users have disagreed with you with explanatiuons of why....you lose. Sorry.

Indeed, what is better in terms of a scanned image comes down greatly to each person's own opinion. I've had a few scans declined that I consider better than those existing. In those cases I read the no votes, try to take on board what they're saying & if I feel able, adjust the scans & re-upload them. There have been many cases where I'll scan the cover but not upload because the change isn't what I consider significant enough to warrant submission.

You and me both, forget.

Ok I just started using this site/program about a week ago and I have to say I'm more then a little mad that almost all the contributions I submitted for anime that was either not in system or special editions of anime that already was in the system are getting declined either with no reason at all or
"An invalid source, such as a third party database, was listed in the contribution notes. Use of a third party database is not allowed per the contribution rules."

So my question now becomes do I have to put my source as "from the DVD sitting in my had as I typed up this contribution?"

Last time I put links to various websites where the info could be verified and that didn't seem to do the trick. So what do I have to do to get info updated on this thing as the contribution "RULES" seem to be rather vague for what to use to allow the ones approving or disapproving everything for verification.

Most information can be obtained from the DVD. For example -
Cast/Crew is taken from the credits.
Audio info/subtitles/aspect ratio/region coding/etc... can be checked with software like PowerDVD.

The reason that 3rd party databases aren't allowed is due to the number of errors that can be on them.

ok should I update DVD info for things then like correcting title names so they all match for a particular series? adding the correct country of origin? or fixing the fact of the incorrect rating was applied to the DVD? these minor corrections could take hours for someone to sort through and I'd hate to cause extra work at this point just fixing 1 or 2 things on a dvd.

You don't make that call. Read the Rules, if you want names to match locally that is your choice. But if an character is credited as with a role of Joe in one episode, Joe Smith in another and Dr. Joe. in a third. You match the credits NOT your personal wishes for Contribution. If you read and follow the Rules, you won't have a problem, if you have questions you can ask, either here or by PM. But follow the Rules and matching things for a series is off  limits if the data says otherwise.

If you are entering credits for crew or cast (voices) you are supposed to take them from the film credits -- and all you need to do is say so "crew and cast taken from the end (or opening) credits of the film".  You are not allowed to enter credits you have taken from a third party database like iMDB.

Elements like running times, video formats, and audio formats should also come from the DVD.  You should indicate how you came upon this information (e.g., runtime verified with PowerDVD; Dolby 5.1 as specified on DVD menu or verified with PowerDVD or DVD Player).

If all you say is "Data from DVD" that doesn't tell the screeners/voters if you got the information from the film itself or from the box cover.  And often the text on the box cover is incorrect.

It may have something to do with the websites you are citing.  If the info is NOT from the program on the DVD but from some other source, the reviewers want to see several links -- to sites that do not share the same source.  Many sites use iMDB data, so if you cite iMDB, Site A, and Site B you may have only provided a single source.

Skip: I read the rules and the only thing I want to do is make sure the correct information is inplace and available to others. If I'm adding a DVD from scratch I avoid adding any of the cast and crew info. Maily cause I don't have the time to sit down and go through the DVD's credits and take notes and then input the info into the database.

The only time I've been adding cast or crew it has been from the profiler itself. All the info is from the standard edition that is already been approved and I just transfer the information from the Standard edition to the deluxe or limited edition. (in all my years of collecting anime the only differences I've ever found in standard and limited/deluxe editions has been items or "swag" and artboxes to hold the whole series.) Or if there is a diffrent barcode then the one that is in the profiler.

Since I just ran into a new problem figure I might as well ask. Who do I contact or what do I do when I find a barcode on 2 similar products have been reversed? For example Mobile Suit Gundam Volume 8 has the barcode for Volume 10 and vice versa.

If you're copying from an existing profile, state that in the contribution notes & quote the EAN/UPC you're copying from.

And if you are copying from another profile, please just give it a quick double-check before submitting - mistakes are made all the time even on accepted profiles, and it's still a lot quicker than typing it in from scratch.

Could you give us a bit more info about this? Are you saying the profiles are on the wrong UPC number or do your copies have mis-printed covers?
Try posting the actual barcode numbers here, there's always users here happy to do a bit research to help clear things up like this.

Sorry for all the posts, I'm still working my way through this thread.
I would say that unless you needed the websties for info that you couldn't get off the DVD (for example if there are no role names in the credits) then I wouldn't put any website links in your notes. If the info you've entered came off the DVD, that's all we need to know, we don't need it verified. It's nice that you would do that, but I think as soon as the screeners see a website address in the notes, their finger automatically starts hovering over the "decline" button!
If you want to preserve the link info - have a look at the "Profile Links" option (under Database, above) - that might be a suitable place to put them.

Also, I noticed you also asked how much or how little you should contribute - that's completely up to you! If you want to submit only one change, that's all you have to submit. All improvements to the database are welcome.

Actually I just found the change UPC code option on the DVD pull down and made the changes and submitted them but here is the quick break down of what it boils down to. I scanned Volume 8 barcode 669198801679 However that barcode came up with the Info for Volume 10.

So I went on with adding the rest of the DVD's and when I got to Volume 10 barcode 669198801693 it came up as Volume 8. I double checked the covers and inserts and the inserts do have stickers on the barcodes giving new barcodes they also have the series name and volume numer on the sticker. So for some reason they were in the database backwards.

That sounds like it could get complicated.
If the DVD distributor has put stickers over the original barcodes, it sounds like they were initially printed using the wrong barcodes.
If they were initially released under those barcodes, even though they were wrong, it may be that they need to stay on those numbers for the online database because at the moment we are only able to profile the first release on each barcode number.
Obviously I don't have these titles and so can't make an informed decision either way as to which volume goes on which barcode number, but if your changes are rejected again (perhaps for this reason) you may have to live with only having the correct profiles in your local database.
At least until we're allowed to profile multiple releases... hint hint, Ken!

I guess I'll have to put this in another way so you can understand what I'm saying. Lets take for example "The Melencoly of Haruhi Suzumiya - Vol. 1" Now at the time of it's initial release there were two diffent editions.

Standard Edition (this one had just the DVD and keep case) and the Limited Edition (the one that had the DVD, keep case, art box, music cd, and some other "swag") now aside from the price and the extra items that were in the artbox aside from the DVD and keep case. The DVD and keep case that was in the Limited Edition is the same as the Standard Edition.

Now for the sake of this, lets say the Standard Edition was added to the database but the Limited Edition was left out. Now someone has the Limited Edition and wants to add it and since all the info for the Standard Edition is the same as the Limited Edition (aside from price, barcode, and cover scans) that person adds the Standard Edition to their collection and copies the info into a new DVD that has the nessary adjustments for the Limited Edition.

So why then should someone read the credits over again and make new notes on something that they already know is correct?
