Joan Blair (1960)
Actress (Donnie Darko)
Sources for BY:

Joan Blair (1903 - 1997)
Actress (Citizen Kane)
Sources for BY:
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0086274/
http://people.theiapolis.com/actress-1SDM/joan-blair/

Attention: this one isn't needed, and therefore not allowed. Why? Because the common name for the first one is actually Joan M. Blair. So we distinghuish between the two by using their common names: Joan Blair for the 1903 one, and Joan M. Blair for the 1960 one.

Correct!

????
The results show a clear 41:18 with 4 entries for the 1903 Joan Blair this leaves a 37:18.
How do you reach the conclusion that the common name might be Joan M. Blair??
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

Is it really expected from a normal user to distinguish the different actors at the CLT count?

I could think this is somewhere ruled, but in the rules it is just
"Enter birth years only when necessary to differentate between two actors with the same name."
And not "... with the same common name"

Still hoping there will be a time we'll get a better solution for this all.

"Name" is the term the rules use for what we often call "common name". They refer, however, to the same thing. A person has only one "name" - and then there sometimes are one or more credit variations. But the "name" stays the "name", and for DVD Profiler, that "name" is defined as the "most-credited form". The rule does not say: "Enter birth years only when necessary to differentate between two actors with the same credit."

Unfortunately, it is. I'm not saying that's wonderful news, because it's hard and tedious work which I expect most users have no interest in doing, but if we don't, then we can all happily start linking entirely different people together...

As for Ms. Blair: I have to admit that the CLT numbers have swayed dramatically since the last time I investigated this, and Silence_of_Lambs provided some cleaned-up CLT numbers to me that support his case. The current common name-finding thread (here) doesn't look good for "Joan M. Blair" either, so I'll admit that I was wrong on this one - and the birth year is needed. I'll remove my earlier post claiming it wasn't.

Don't want to disturb further,...

... but if the common name would change again, in this example to Joan M. Blair, we would not just have to change the common name in all those profiles, but additional we would have to delete the Birth Years of two persons.
Imho not really very effective and logical.

What would be the harm of adding the BY to all variants? (It is always the same person  ) What, if after the imaginary change of the common name back to Joan M. Blair, another actress would get in database with the same common name? Adding the removed BY again to the new different common name?

All very complicated.

Please see this post more as loudly thinking than really questions.

The BY system as it stands indeed isn't very effective, nor very logical. Just think about the simple fact that for most people we can't even find one - for instance; I'm forced to have about two hundred fake birth years in my local database... What we need, is a never-changing unique identifier for each and every person in our database. As of yet, there has been no signal that we may be getting something like that, so for now, I'm trying to make the best of what we've got.

This is the only thing we can do. And I'm glad for every update I get, because I would never ever find the time to do this linking and research in my database.

My one wish for the DVD Profiler online database: Ban or remove the disc-level profiles of TV season sets. It completely screws up/inflates the CLT.
FACT: Imdb is WRONG 70% of the time! Misspelled cast, incomplete cast, wrong cast/crew roles. So for those who want DVD Profiler to be "as perfect as Imdb", good luck with that.
Stop adding UNIT crew! They're invalid credits. Stop it!

On February 27, 2008 (!), Gerri Cole Wrote:

Quoting Gerri Cole:

The birth year will be accepted to differentiate between a cast and crew member. In your example below, Marc Warren is a valid birth year.

Since then, though, the Marc Warren birth year still hasn't made it into this thread. I thought I'd fix that:

British actor ('Hustle', 'State of Play', 'Band of Brothers') Marc Warren (1967):
- IMDb
- Wikipedia
- BFI.org.uk

American writer/director/producer ('Cory in the House', 'Full House', 'That's So Raven') Marc Warren (????):
