use what's on the cover.

Where on the cover? As I noted earlier, most Fox covers use both: are you going by the various logos that use "20th", or with the small print where it says "Distributed by Twentieth Century Home Entertainment"? You're still going to have to choose: just have a look at a few of your own Fox DVD's and you'll see what I mean.
I don't care whether you regard the question as choosing between the two name variants or choosing between where on the cover you pick the name from, but the result remains pretty much the same. Which one do we use?

I did as you suggested, and you are correct. I verified 2 R1's, 1 R2 and 1 A,B,C blu-ray. They all have the 20th logo, and the Twentieth text.

In this case, my personal preference would be to use 20th C..., but I'm happy with whatever the majority wants.

I think I'm with everyone else here: I'm not fussed which one we go for as long as we're consistent (as long as the covers are consistent).
However, on looking at FOX's official sites, they always seem to refer to themselves as "Twentieth" in the legal bumph, this seems to imply "Twentieth" is the proper name and "20th" is used as an abbreviation.

According to the Studio Reference thread;

20th Century Fox
  Studios
      20th Century Fox
      20th Century Fox Television
      Fox 2000 Pictures
      Fox Searchlight
      Twentieth Century Fox Animation
Twentieth Century Fox (Use as appropriate, if in doubt post a query in this thread)
      Twentieth Century-Fox

  Distribution
20th Century Fox Home Entertainment

Now - this gives us the option to use both 20th and Twentieth for studios and 20th only for distribution.
If consistency is what we are after this section should be modified to allow for only 20th or Twentieth.

Northbloke seems to have done some good detective work, that should lean us in the direction of Twentieth (IMHO), but as I've said before it doesn't matter to me which one we go for, as long as we are CONSISTENT...

As for the theatrical branch: generally, their films are preceded by a logo showing "20th", but the actual film credits spell out the full "Twentieth" almost every time (I can't even remember a single actual "20th" credit right now) . So I've been consistently using "Twentieth Century Fox" for quite some time now.

I'm not sure, but the reason that the studios-thread uses the shorter "20th Century Fox Home Entertainment" version may have been that the studios field just wasn't long enough to allow the longer variant back then.

I believe that's the original reason.

I agree - the Studio Reference thread should be updated.

The studios thread won't be updated unless Ken clarifies the rule situation to settle the dispute discussed there on pages 10-12 in October regarding whether the thread is to be used or not. I've sent him a PM and bumped it once.

That makes sense - I wasn't aware of the thread you refer to..

However, this would mean that voters/contributors should not refer to this thread either when voting/contributing, no? We would simply go with the "credited as" option IMO.

So it seems both the rules and the thread need a revision in this instance... (For what it's worth I personally find the Studio Thread quite useful).

I'm not taking sides in this one, but presented for your consideration:

Plug in "twentieth century fox" or "20th century fox" here (both the Corp and the LP / LLC searches):

California Secretary of State - California Business Search

It appears the official, corporate names have always been "twentieth," at least as far back as the searchable records go, and that the "20th" variants are likely akas, dbas or unofficial.

on several occasions Ken let the forum know to use the Contact Us at the bottom of each forum page and not the PM, looks like you could be waiting for a long time.

And now should be Twentieth and not 20th Century Fox...

Where are logic and consistency ???

No, that's not what it means: that's basically what that entire discussion is about. At the moment, there's no consensus whatsoever - we just have the rules telling us to use "correct names for studios". From that thread:

taking that section of the rules as a whole, including the fact that they link to this thread which Invelos keeps as a sticky and in which Ken has posted comments such as "I can add filters to the acceptance process that automatically convert incorrect names into correct names.  Thoughts?" (page 1) I think it's pretty clear how we are to make the rule work.

If someone were to say in their contribution notes that they were entering an incorrect studio name because there is no rule which binds them to enter correct data, I would vote no and I would anticipate that Invelos would follow through with a decline.

This is how I see things as well - it's the only logical way - but a couple of users have tried to challenge this, and now James is waiting for further clarification from Ken before doing any more updates.

I found that as well. So there's that, then we had Northbloke reporting that Fox's own websites also use the full "Twentieth", and last but not least it's consequently listed as such in the copyright notice of the actual DVD covers. All in all, it's only the logo where we see "20th".

Does anyone remember the days long ago when we would have preferred to use 20th because the studio fleld wasn't enough room for the whole Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment and we had to abbreviate things?
