I agree skip... That is what I was saying too. It is being made more difficult because John wants to put recurring cast with the main cast for some reason.

Skip's right on this one...this makes sense and is simple. Any other method opens up all sorts of possibilities and room for debate. Does this one? Of course, but we'll have a lot less "exceptiions to the rule" than any other method.

Option #2 won't give ANY room for exceptions or discussions, as it is plain simple and clear.

If we really wanted to get TECHNICAL about  and go for pure accuracy, we would have to sit and WATCH everything, which right now I only wish I had time to do, because many's the time that actors in the main cast get a week or two off, therefore there are Episodes where they don't really appear even though they are credited, which would take us back to Option 2

There are Episodes of M*A*S*H for instance that Loretta Swit(for example) does not appear even though she is credited for ALL episodes.

That is true skip... but they would still be credited in dvdprofiler... because they are still in the main credits...  so they are still credited for that episode whether they are in it or not.

The question is a simple one and while it won't apply in every situation, thank you, Hollywood, it will apply to most. A person who is intorduce mide-season in opening credits should only be billed with each set of Episode data for the remainder of that Season, after all they do NOT appear in all Episodes. Assuming in the next season they keep the opening credits the same, that person would then become an above the divider credit. This rreally is very simple, why are we making it so hard.

Skip

I completely agree with Skip.
I've just edited a season of Buffy, just to see how the dividers work etc. Without even reading this discussion I did as described above....it seems to make the most sense logically.

yeah... I think it is the most logical way too... I already did Three's Company: Season 1... here is what I ended up with...

John Ritter as Jack Tripper
Joyce DeWitt as Janet Wood
Suzanne Somers as Chrissy Snow
Audra Lindley as Helen Roper
Norman Fell as Stanley Roper

1. A Man About The House
Kit McDonough as Patricia Crawford

2. And Mother Makes Four
Priscilla Morrill as Chrissy's Mother
Lou Wills as Cabbie
Shera Danese as Barmaid

3. Roper's Niece
Christina Hart as Karen

4. No Children, No Dogs
Richard Kline as Larry

5. Jack The Giant Killer
Peter Palmer as Jeff
Peter Schuck as Pete
Karen Fredrik as Barmaid
Paul Ainsley as Bartender

6. It's Only Money
William Pierson as Mr. Travers
Joey Forman as Policeman

it looks pretty good online too. I think it really is the best way to go.

Definitely agreeing with it.
"I am Andrew Ryan and I am here to ask you a question:
Is a man not entitled to the sweat of his own brow?

No, says the man in Washington. It belongs to the poor.
No, says the man in the Vatican. It belongs to God.
No, says the man in Moscow. It belongs to everyone.

I rejected those answers. Instead, I chose something
different. I chose the impossible. I chose…
Rapture."

just being in more then 1 episode for the season shows they are recurring characters... if they are not in the main credits every week they should not be in the main section... that is showing false information you look at it above and you think they are in every episode.

Now I can ask you..  if they are not in every episode and they are listed in the main section how do we know they are not in every episode??

You said yourself that... and I quote "but they do list at the beginning, and it varies somewhat from week to week"... if it varies week to week they are not credited every episode. So they would go under every episode that they are credited for... not credit them for the entire season and let people guess which episode they are in... or let people think they are in every episode.

We're talking about two different things here.  Recurring cast are those people who are under contract who are the main stars of the show, and they may not always be IN every show.  Their status is high enough that they rate their name in lights at the beginning of the show.

The "extra" cast is normally listed at the end of the show right after the producer's name.  Those are the names that would go in the 'divided' sections for each episode.

Playing with the possibility in a multi-language disc (Blue Gender v.1, since I've been experimenting on that one anyway), I could see it being rebuilt as follows:

From

Kenji Nojima as Yuji
Houko Kuwashima as Marlene
Noriki Hori as Robert
Hisayoshi Suganuma as Joey
Masura Matsumoto as Keith (Ep. 1 & 2)
Chusou Omizu as Takashi (Ep. 1)
Tomohisa Asou as Doctor (Ep. 1)
Keiko Takeda as Miney (Ep. 2)
Eric Johnson as Yuji Kaido
Laura Bailey as Marlene
Kyle Hebert as Robert, Takashi (Ep. 1)
John Burgmeier as Joey
Christopher R. Sabat as Keith (Ep. 1 & 2)
Kent Williams as Doctor (Ep. 1)
Carol Hope as Minnie (Ep. 2)

To

Japanese Cast
Kenji Nojima as Yuji
Houko Kuwashima as Marlene
Noriki Hori as Robert
Hisayoshi Suganuma as Joey
Episode 1: Oneday
Masura Matsumoto as Keith
Chusou Omizu as Takashi
Tomohisa Asou as Doctor
Episode 2: Cry
Masura Matsumoto as Keith
Keiko Takeda as Miney
English Cast
Eric Johnson as Yuji Kaido
Laura Bailey as Marlene
Kyle Hebert as Robert
John Burgmeier as Joey
Episode 1: Oneday
Kyle Hebert as Takashi
Christopher R. Sabat as Keith
Kent Williams as Doctor
Episode 2: Cry
Christopher R. Sabat as Keith
Carol Hope as Minnie

Made the dividers bold to make them easier to see.

Now that the same individual can be listed multiple times, it's easier to specify their roles per episode this way (eg: Kyle Herbert or Chris Sabat).  By the same token, listing the same person over and over for a role they're going to continue to have for a while would get old fast, so I think I really would prefer to use this main/episodic role separation.

There were no extra entries for episode 3.  Should there be a blank divider for it?  Is it better to spell out 'Episode', or should it be like Pete's example and just use the number?  Alternatively, the episode dividers could include the language they belong to (eg:  Episode 1 (en): Oneday), but that seems unnecessarily redundant to me.

Edit: oh, and they should all have (voice) tagged at the end, but leaving that off for simplicity at the moment.

To me, Option 2 = no good. If we go to Option 2, we should at least list the main cast at the top, and then also for each episode.

I don't even know what the issue is here. Opening credits (show intro) go at the top - everyone else in episode dividers. Seems really, REALLY simple.

I agree, plus if you reenter the primary cast names over and over again it slows everything down.
With the current error of duplicating names on id submitted TV profiles has slowed my system to a creep.
We don't need stinkin' IMDB's errors, we make our own.

Your definition of Recurring Cast is not the same as ours.  The way we are using it Main Cast means people that are credited in every episode even when they are not in said episode.  Recurring Cast would be semi-regulars that are only credited in the episodes they are in.

As an example, Edward James Olmos is a Main Cast member for Battlestar Galactica.  He is in the credits for every episode.  Luciana Carro is a recurring cast member.  She appeared in 18 episodes.  She does not appear in the credits for every episode, only the ones she was actually in.  She, and actors like her, don't belong in the Main Cast section of the credits.
