Agreeing with Chibul in wondering this.

Example (don't have specifics here) but people like James Marsters and Amber Benson went from recurring to Main cast mid-season on Buffy... are they listed in the main credits for that season from the get-go? or only once the next season roles around (assuming they remain with the show)...

tricky tricky

While option 1 is certainly tidier, all of the reservations people have go away with option 2, with the exception of the increased mass of data. Although with the majority of series, the main cast are outweighed by recurring or guest cast. I voet #2 anyway.

Now as to the poll, I think i pretty clearly have the answer I asked for. Although I must admit it surprises me a little it with so many references this week about people talking about accuracy. Guess that argument goes away in the future.

That's an interesting one, Bob. Amber Benson only made the opening credits for one episode, it seems ludicrous to have her in the main cast for the whole year and disregarded which episodes she did or didn't appear in.

Bob:

This is outside this discussion , but I think I explained it very clearly. The people you refer to CANNOT be included in the Main cast for that Season because they were not credityed for EVERY Episode. They would be credited within the dividers for the balance of that season.

Think about what above what the divider says about those Cast people, I'll piclk a REAL SIMPLE one
Barbara Billingsley
Hugh Beaumont
Tony Dow
Jerry Mathers
They appeared in EACh and Every Episode.

Everybody else gets there credit in the Episode in which they appeared. could someone explain to me why this recurring character, guest star, extra discussion is even important or an issue. This is SOOOOOOO simple. Why are you making it hard.

Honestly, who cares? We're making a huge deal about the definition of the word recurring. It's pointless.

Agreed.  It seems half the arguments around here are about definitions instead of data.

Quoting chibul:
Quote:
Main cast - Top of the cast list
Everyone else - Credited for each episode they're in

Why the insistence on making this more difficult?

I agree again.  Call it what you want.  It doesn't really matter.  There's no point in arguing about definitions.  It's very simple in this case.

I agree have I mentioned recurring characters, in other than response, NO I haven't...why because they are irelevant to the question.

I guess it depends on how you define the word argument

Is this a five minute argument or the full half hour?

For the special circumstances where a recurring member becomes a regular, why not give them their own divider?

MAIN CAST
--DIVIDER-- (Listing the point from which the recurring became regulars, ex. REGULAR IN EPISODES 9-22)
NEW REGULAR
--EPISODE DIVIDERS--
GUEST STARS

Occasionally you see this in series, NOT all that frequently and it when it is used it is noit used consistently. the basic premise still follows As credited in the Order they are credited. We don't worry about such designations in film, TV is no different in this regard. Typical, let's take an ant hill and turn it into Mt. Everest.

I honestly wish I knew what you were talking about as it seems, after reading all your statements, that we are on the same page.

Because John keeps bringing it up.  We, and I believe you as well, want Main Cast at the top and everyone else listed in the episodes they are credited in.  John wants recurring cast included with the main cast even if they are not credited in every episode.  We are attempting to explain to John that there is a difference and, because of that difference, they should not be treated the same.

I have no opinion, as I noted the first option is perhaps a bit cleaner appearing, while the second option is accurate to the Credits. I can see both arguments, though as i noted as much as I have seen accuracy bandied about the last few days, I was frankly surprised at the outcome...but it works.

My mistake then...

I actually wasn't surprised by the outcome.  In films, an actor is listed one time and one time only...except when they play multiple roles, which isn't the norm.  In TV series they can be listed 20+ times.  I think the though of listing the same 7 or so actors that many times over the coures of 7, 8, 9 or more seasons wasn't attractive.

My method is to watch the show (or credits) and keep track of all the actors per episode. The ones that are screen credited in all the episodes (by any means - main titles, etc) I put in the main cast. All others (even if they were credited in all but one epsiode) go under episode headings.

I think the vote is clear. What is not yet clear is, what is the Main Cast. For that I like chibul's and darkforce's assessment:

Quoting chibul:
Quote:
To me, Option 2 = no good. If we go to Option 2, we should at least list the main cast at the top, and then also for each episode.

I don't even know what the issue is here. Opening credits (show intro) go at the top - everyone else in episode dividers. Seems really, REALLY simple.

Quoting darkforce:

It is not important who is in every episode, but how can we define Main Cast. And I agree, the opening credits should be the indicator here. Leaving us with the question of those people who get promoted mid-season, where I'd agree with darkforce, that these people simply get top-billing for the episodes where they are in the opening credits.

If you all feel, that you already cleared this while talking about Main Cast, then just ignore this post...

In the end this poll says... nothing. We just have to wait until Ken updates the rules and clarifies this. Until then I won't contribute to TV Series.
