Ah so ... I'll check my code to make sure that's what I am doing. I think I'm doing that already.

Your prior post reminded me of some other stuff I was going to ask about:

Of course I need locality to create a profile ID - that's why I put the dropdown. Title is not absolutely necessary, but very useful for identification, so if not in the metadata or typed in by the contributor, I will use the disc label as a temporary title. I also plan to flag the newly created profile to further assist finding it. Then I will pop up the normal DVDP Edit Profile panel to allow immediate further editing if desired.

My question is whether there are a limited number of other manual fields that would be helpful to have on the DVDPca screen. I can think of Collection Type, so that you can force the new profile into a custom collection if desired.

Keeping in mind that you will get the normal edit screen later, are there any other fields that would be useful to have before the "create" button is pressed?  (and I agree I need to indicate somehow that they are manual fields)
Thanks for your support.

Everybody please go back and look at the Mapping document where I explain what I am doing and have a plea for help.

I tried a few DVDs of various video formats, to see if one can get anything reliably from the metadata.

Queen Christina (012569673878) Full Frame 1.33:1

Destination Tokyo (012569573222) Full Frame 1.33:1

Air Force One (043396155749.3) Pan&Scan 1.33:1

Toy Soldiers (043396089006) Pan&Scan 1.33:1

I Heart Huckebees (024543169482), side A Pan&Scan 1.33:1

I Heart Huckebees (024543169482), side B Widescreen 2.35:1

The Bourne Ultimatum (025193227423.3) Widescreen 2.40:1

Rachel Getting Married  (043396304345.3) Widescreen 1.85:1

Sadly, there does not seem to be much rhyme and reason to the way DVD makers encode their disc metadata.

@Wigram (bowing deeply ...)

This is the kind of analysis and feedback that developers crave and exactly what I was pleading for. I can't thank you enough.

I will study to see if it can lead to any improvements. Also, I am suspicious of my "Side" code. Is it true that "SideB" doesn't appear, or is it a bug. I will try to find out.

One additional bit of info: except for aspect ratio, which I am still working on, for which cases did the Mapping side of the DVDPca correspond correctly to what you would contribute, and which didn't?

Ugh. Just spent a long time typing this and it disappeared. These flags interact with the player setting for the TV, which can be 4:3 pan & scan, 4:3 letterbox or widescreen.

In theory, 4:3 letterbox would chop the sides off a widescreen movie for 4:3 TVs whereas letterbox would letterbox it, but no one has ever used it this way. In practice, 4:3 pan & scan is only used on menus. That way, they fill up your whole TV no matter what. Letterbox is used for widescreen movies. You'll never see both flags enabled on the same video file. The I Heart Huckabees example below seems to be a menu with a long music loop, not the movie.

If the letterbox flag is enabled, the player squeezes thee image from 480 to 360 pixels high (NTSC) or 576 to 432 (PAL). Technically, the video is 525 pixels high for NTSC and 625 for PAL, but the extra forty-some pixels do not contain picture data. The top and bottom 12.% of the screen are filled in with player-generated black mattes.

On a widescreen TV, the full picture data is always sent. Some player can determine if an image is 4:3 and add side-mattes, but that's not part of the spec.

So the only useful info in the metadata  is whether the base frame is 16:9 or 4:3. The only way to get AR info is to measure the picture area and compare it to the frame. There's no way to tell if a 4:3 image is supposed to be that way or if it's a pan & scan job from an flags and spotting the oddities in cinematography is, I'm sure, beyond the scope of this project.

What does Profiler consider to be the "default locality"?

I believe it is defined by the user in the program options:

Heh heh,  . Of course. Well I'll check to see if it is in the API. If so, I will "make it so."

Oh, I see this was a post I missed earlier.

To avoid confusion I would say: only what DVDPca brings up and the necessary stuff to create the profile, everything else should be done inside the DVD Profiler edit-section.

One thing that might come in handy: an optional tag, similar to what Bulk Edit does.

I am PMing Ken to get a ruling on this. Stop harrasing me. If you don't like what I am doing, either ignore it or get Invelos to ask me to stop. I offered to move this discussion anywhere else on the site, but people continued to talk about it here.

You seem to have issues with my participation on this site. Why don't you have the courage to send me a PM to discuss it, instead of every now and then blasting some nasty comment into the Forum.

Until this matter is resolved, I will cease any further posts and work on this project until I get a Moderator ruling.

Re locality: Yeah, I guess I stepped in the same trap as Mithi...
Fields that are not filled in automatically should default to blank, in my opinion.
It's confusing to see the field filled in with United States when you check an R2 or R4 release, like I did.

Yeah, about that mapping document. I've seen it mentioned, but where can I find it?

Ignore it.  I got as far as "You seek publicity" before hitting the red arrow.  That was rude and completely unnecessary.

As for the rest, I'd say your tools falls under the "Discuss profile contributions: quality, correctness, and tips" umbrella quite well!

I agree... ignore it... Report it sure... but don't let it stop you from continuing on the project. And I am sure Mark's isn't the only red arrow he got for that comment.
