It's a shame that after 10 years, studios still cannot get progressive encoding of film based contents right.

More the reason to establish a standard that works with these Asian titles.  By the way which version did you get?

I have the LE.  Awesome set, especially for the price.  Enjoyed it very much.

Post for Chinjeolhan Geum-ja ssi (Sympathy for Lady Vengeance) is up. As always, feedback is welcome.

I also added some additional posters to Dalkomhan Insaeng (A Bittersweet Life) Post.

I also have this. But I wasn't too impressed with the soundtrack.
Bonus stuff is fun, but as always no subs (still some interesting stuff in there like the deleted scenes). Loved the weta featurette where you could hear Noami Watts scream all the time in the background and everybody ignores this

I will have to double check since I haven't watched them yet, but I swear on mine the bonus features are subtitled.

Hi xradman,

Great list you have there, you've covered almost all the essential Korean films!!

If anybody out there hasn't taken time to watch a Korean film, watch some of the ones on his list.  They really are better than anything that the US studios have put out lately.

xradman, I'd suggest a couple more for your list

- 3-Iron (A Kim Ki-duk movie)
- Arahan (fantasy)
- The Coast Guard (very underrated IMHO)
- Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring (another Kim Ki-duk movie)
- Fighter in the Wind (based on the life of Choi Bae-dal)
- Untold Scandal (WAY better than the US version Dangerous Liasons)
- R-Point (for some reason Koreans make excellent war movies)
- The Foul King (action comedy about a wrestler)
- Sex is Zero (sort of like an American Pie movie)

I'm gonna second schultzySave The Green Planet deserves a guernsey.

Korean movies in my collection:
Bichunmoo - I'm terrible at remembering specifics of movies (good for rewatchability), but I recall this one being a good fantasy film.
JSA - unseen and already listed
Oseam - COME ON!  Why is this not listed?
The Quiet Family - Unseen but probably not suitable for a snobby essentials list.
Save the Green Planet! - Genre-spanning, highly acclaimed and downright nuts.  It should be in there.
Shadowless Sword - Received this today, still unseen.
Spider Forest - Unseen
Volcano High - Has had success overseas, is accessible.  What exactly makes something "essential" anyway?
Wonderful Days - Even at the height of my anime-watching days, this stood out.  It's absolutely stunning, and for that alone deserves a place in the list.

I did own Arahan, but didn't like it so handballed it along to someone else.
Adelaide Movie Buffs (info on special screenings, contests, bargains, etc. relevant to Adelaideans... and contests/bargains for other Aussies too!)

FWIW Rewind says the features on the UK release of the Host are subtitled

BTW
I watched The Host again the weekend, great flick IMHO.

What I cannot get my head around however, what does "seo-ri" actually mean? Okay, from the context I would say it has something to do with stealing food to avoid starving ( ) but what does it really mean?
