Explain syncing from phone to laptop and online?

I have the desktop version, the Android version and an online account. I am really confused by how DVD Profiler stores the databases. I initially setup the phone to sync with the laptop, but the laptop IP address changes constantly so that method is a pain. I would have thought that the laptop could sync to the web and then the phone could sync to the web and everything would be great. Is that the say to do it? If so, how?

How do I tell the mobile version to save it's files to the external sdcard? I know the security issues in Android changed and versions after 4.4.2 and before 6 could only write to specific folders on external storage.

I use the phone with the camera to scan all the new DVD's, but the laptop is the "master" database. How can I sync everything, hopefully by making the online version the master? Right now I have 3 databases on the phone, "online", "default" which links to the laptop via IP address, and "local connection" which I think I told to go to the external SD card when I set it up.

Do all three store the actual data on the phone and just sync the phone to them? Obviously, I want only 1 database on the phone and for it to be saved on the external sd. And can you move things from one to the other? For example, how do I sync the local database that I put on the SD card to the laptop or the online database?

Why do you constantly change the private IP addresse(s) in your local network?

In DVD Profiler for Windows: Menu Online -> DVD Profiler Online...
In DVD Profiler for Android: select Connection Type "Connect Via DVD Profiler Online", then Update Database.

I don't change the IP addresses. Having static IP settings on my router is extra work with all the changes that occur on my home network. Like most people, I imagine, I use DHCP to assign IPs. So as things boot and reboot, the IPs change constantly.

Can I make the online database store to the phone's external sdCard? In other words, I save the laptops database to the online server, then tell the mobile version to connect to dvd profiler online and when I update from online, all the data stores on my external card and not the phone's internal memory.

I am willing to change the IP address settings in the mobile version each time if it is better to connect directly to the laptop and that will let me save the phone's data to the sDcard and keep all the data synced.

Or is there any way to copy the database to the "local" database after I download it from online? I can see that when I create the local database, it asks if I want to store my data internally or on the SDCard. I don't see how to store desktop or online databases to external storage. I also need to make sure any databases are deleted except for the one I want on the sdcard. thanks for the help

If you use your router as a DHCP server, why would the assigned LAN IP addresses of your devices change?

Of course, why not?

You're making this more complicated than it needs to be fdecker.  You don't need to give all your devices a static IP address.  Configure the computer running DVD Profiler with a static IP address, an IP address outside your routers DHCP pool.  Will take all of a minute to do and you're done.

(If you'd rather keep your computer set to use a dynamic IP address you could instead configure your router "if supported" to reserve a specific IP address for your computer.  This is what I do as I run DVD Profiler on a laptop which often connects to other wired/wireless networks when used on-the-go.  As such, I keep my laptop configured to use a dynamic IP address, when used at home the same IP address always being assigned as it's reserved, i.e. having your cake and eating it too.)

Either way, once ensuring the computer running DVD Profiler is always using the same IP address while on your local network you'll then be able to create a "DVD Profiler for PC" database on your mobile device knowing that the IP address configured will not need to be changed needlessly going forward.  Once performing a database update at that point you'll then be able to enjoy exactly what you see within DVD Profiler on your mobile device, no limitations as there are with syncing online, no Internet required.

To each his own naturally, but one of the best features about this product line (unlike the later versions of My Movies) is the fact that you aren't forced to be attached at the hip with the online servers.  With the exception of those only using the mobile apps (in some respects), the online servers are only needed to download and contribute profile data, and if you want to view your collection online you can still do that.  Just upload it from DVD Profiler.

It may just be a mental block for me, but the user interface of this feature confuses me. I had 3 databases, "online", "local external SD" and "default". I deleted all but the "local external SD". When I created this database, I did select "external media card". I never updated it. So I went into "change connection type" and told it to connect to my laptop. Then I updated the database.  How can I verify this database is the one on the SDcard and that there is no data being stored in the phone's memory?

FWIW, I gave he laptop a reserved IP and am going to try that. On two different routers, when I did this, some machines could not connect to the network half of the time. That is why I gave up trying. It is like DHCP with reserved addresses is flaky on home routers. We'll see.

On my Android, it says I am using 12.75MB for the application and .95GB data, all on the internal storage.  I have the option to clear the cache (39.5MB) and to "clear data" for that close to 1GB that I would love to free up. Afraid to just do that on the phone since I don't know what data that is. Unless when I updated the database I thought was on my SDcard and it is not, I can't imagine what the software would be doing using up 1GB of my internal storage.

Well, I tried it anyway and the Android didn't show that the data was freed up. However, when I went back into DP, it was like a fresh install. I had to add everything back in again. I will use a file manager to explore and see what is stored where. The first time I tried to update this database from the laptop, Android DP crashed. I sent a bug report. It is updating now, but interestingly, the status bar at the bottom of the laptop version of DP said I have 2 connections. Halfway through the update process, it changed back to only 1 connection.
