Statistics for "the" DVD Profiler main online database

I just got this funny idea (at least to me):

It would be fun if I somehow could see a number for each of my respective collection entries in my local database that describes how many times each enty has been globally "downloaded" from the DVD Profiler main online database. These numbers would act as a minor description of how many people has the exact same entries in their local database. It would probably not be very accurate, specially for the "popular" entries. But it should give us a small idea. I believe I would see some big differences for these numbers in my collection.

This requires of course appropiate programming both on server (preferably should already been done in the earliest days to achieve as correct statistics as possible) and in DVD Profiler Windows application to display these numbers for my collection. (Or maybe displayed only in the online collection view as logged in?). So I understand perfectly that this probably won't happen.

However:
Are there any available updated statistics, in any matter, from the DVD Profiler main database somewhere we all can see? For example in a specific web page at www.invelos.com? Maybe such a page wolud not be displaying all registered titles (too many entries = too long web page). I picture for example the number of total entries, the most accessed (or most frequently accessed) titles/UPC/EAN, and such "simple and basic" statistics.

I have tried a few forum searches about this, but couldn't find any specific information about this.

No matter what: Have fun!

Interesting. Not sure of what use that would be, but no matter. I just wonder if Invelos has kept those sorts of statistics? Lets assume that they haven't. Would that data still be useful going forward? Why? (totally out of curiosity - really no opinion on it).

Yes, wouldn't it be fun to have access to such numbers?

You are probably right. A good guess is that the early statistics aren't there. So there would be reasonable to imagine only "new" statistics.

Maybe it would be most interesting to read such numbers the first time, though. The numbers would surely increase in time, but I guess they probably wouldn't change much in relation to each other. I mean: Popular entries (titles) would mostly keep on beeing popular.

Hm. Maybe I am talking about a sort of index system instead, if that is the name of it. I can try to explain: I picture one "star" (or what ever, or "10%") for entries with the fewest downloads, and maybe five or ten "stars" (100%) for those entries whitch have the most downloads. This can maybe even be implemented without the early statistics available, if the relations mostly stays the same in the (long time) future.

Maybe the only thing I myself can picture using this informatin to, is to see if other people appreciate the few contributions I add to the main database.    Else it's probably more just for Fun Facts.

I do like fun stuff, though.

Thinking about what you are saying and how the Invelos download works: most of the time, downloads occur en masse, either due to a database restore or profile updates. I'm not sure that the number of downloads of a particular title means much.

Are you really talking about the number of users that have downloaded the title at least once?

Ah, You have very good point. I didn’t think of that. Then yes, I am picturing the number of users that have downloaded each titles at least once, if the DVD Profiler system can’t differenciate between adding new (unknown) titles to a local database and a restore (or profile update). I guess this makes my idea even more complex to implement. Not that I expect it to happen, though. It would just be a fun feature.

But how about just providing some basic info somewhere in a web page, then? A few examples:

  • Total number of profiles in main database

  • Number of accepted new profiles last 30 days

  • Number of updated profiles last 30 days

  • ...and such.

    Based on my relatively simple understanding of programming, I imagine these statistics numbers shouldn’t be to hard to implement.

    Things like this almost never get decided on the basis of how hard or easy it is. Where does the program run (probably in the cloud), who is authorized to do it (Invelos), is the authorized entity motivated to do it (probably not), etc.

    If a plugin could do it, there would probably be a couple of people already messing with it by now.

    @ruben:
    When I saw Your reply, I remembered to have seen such a number somewhere in the Windows program. I found it in the Add a new title to my local collection, although the number was a bit lower for me (about 840460-ish). Anyway, thank You for giving me a simple but effective heads up.

    @medialogg:
    Of course, You are probably right about the deciding matter. This is just to discuss an idea, that to me have been nice to have, but not neccecary. And anyone is welcome to make a plugin of this.

    But my comment was meant to imply that if it could be done, it probably would have been by now. It can't be done by a plugin.

    OK. Sorry, I misunderstood. And I see Your points. Guess I better stop writing any more about stuff I don't understand.

    Thank You for Your thoughts and hints!
