I've saw this earlier on the DigitalBits:

" You may have heard by now that Toshiba has made pre-Black Friday arrangements with Wal-Mart to effectively dump its HD-A2 HD-DVD player starting this Friday (this weekend only) for just $98.87. You may also have heard that Best Buy has followed suit. Supplies are limited, of course, and the offer is apparently not valid in some parts of the country that have state anti-dumping laws.

Wikipedia defines dumping as "the act of a manufacturer in one country exporting a product to another country at a price which is either below the price it charges in its home market or is below its costs of production." Toshiba's move isn't really anti-competitive, because there are no U.S. manufacturers making HD-DVD players. But it's that "below its costs of production" part that applies in this case. The HD-A2 arrived in the States with an original MSRP of $499.99. Now, Toshiba is letting it go for just $99. There's no way the player cost less than $100 to manufacturer. Just. No. Way.

You might wonder: How can Toshiba possibly have enough HD-A2s left to sell at just $99 at large, nationwide retailers? Simple. It's because they didn't sell originally, so plenty of stores still have them sitting on shelves, gathering dust. Toshiba is eager to clear them all out at this point, and Wal-Mart and Best Buy are happy to help."

That may be true but something tells me they won't be collecting dust on store shelves for much longer. The Wal-Mart sale, and specifically the HD-A2 was highlighted on my local news. This is a big deal...

There's just no pleasing some people, I guess.   Now, before you tear into me and impugn my intelligence, let me just say that I know very little about either format; I simply see where trends are headed, based on my own experience. If HD wins, fine. If Blu-Ray wins, fine.

Just wanted to point that out.

For the record, and it's official...Walmart has a HD DVD (HD-a2) player for $98.87. Think that isn't going to sell three or four units? Also, they will have a selection of $14.99 titles to go with it. Part of the early holiday shopping season.

Does anyone remember when I said before HD DVD goes away, you will see $99 HD DVD players?  It's almost like prophecy.

They're just clearing shelf space to make room for the new HD-A3, but even that will be on sale in places for under $200 pretty soon.  That Black Friday Sears deal is pretty tempting.  I've been holding out to pick up a dual format player so I can just buy movies from both sides.. but man, a player and 7 free movies?  Must... resist....

I guess YOU call it a God complex when someone gets it right.

It looks like I'm still holding around 90% accuracy with my predictions, so far.

Care to elaborate...Nevermind, don't bother. I've been here for two months and am probably getting more right than you are.

Quote:
March 16, 2007: The standalone Sony BDP-S300 Blu-ray player is looking to be around $300 by Black Friday (November)

March 19, 2007 : IMO, around December this year will be the end of Universal's exclusive HD DVD support and HD DVD (accept(sic) for the people that already have a HD DVD player). When Universal goes neutral, there will be no need to seek out a combo HD players.  Every major studio would be on Blu-ray.

March 22, 2007 : (The Matirx Trilogy) will be on Blu-ray this year.

April 13, 2007 : And, no, Blu-ray never offered 5 free movies with a player.  IMO, when you keep offering more free movies with a player, that tells me that what you offered the first time isn't working (3 free movies with every player).  That's just usually how things go in the business world, so I don't expect it to be any different this time.

After the first 18 pages of your illiterate drivel in this thread I finally found one prediction that you got right:
Quote:
April 17, 2007 : Does anyone think Toshiba will start making Blu-ray players?

When Sony sold off their PS3 semi conductor factories to Toshiba due to financial difficulty and huge losses, your prediction kinda came true!!

March 16, 2007  -  Is it Black Friday, yet?  I'm glad you mention this one.  Now, I don't have to go that far back to find it for Black Friday.

March 19, 2007  -  The key word is AROUND Dec.  The NEXT line in that post you quote from says, "Maybe even announced at CES 2008".  That would be January.  Let's see how that one turns out.

March 22, 2007  -  I wonder why you don't include the ENTIRE post.  Do you have an answer for that?  Anyway, THAT was NOT a prediction.  I was purely going by WARNER BROS. statement.

April 13, 2007  -  Did you see the word OFFERED (meaning PAST) in the first sentence?  What led you to think THAT was a PREdiction?  It was a TRUE statement.  The BDA didn't offer more free movies 'til after HD DVD did.

April 17, 2007  -  AGAIN, why don't you quote the ENTIRE post?  I believe that post was about one of Toshiba's company making Blu-ray drives.  THAT was a CURRENT event.

The following statement, on the other hand, is NOT true.

Quote:

Sony had a plan in place SOME time ago to reduce overhead.  This is part of a 3-YEAR turnaround plan that was started a long time ago.

You need to stay CLOSE to the truth and not mix truth with deception.

This does beg the question...does the following statement still hold true?

"IMO, when you keep offering more free movies with a player, that tells me that what you offered the first time isn't working (3 free movies with every player).  That's just usually how things go in the business world, so I don't expect it to be any different this time."

I have a pretty good idea what the answer is going to be, but I hold out a small bit of hope that I am wrong.

If the quote is stripped away from the rest of that post (and the posts before it), then it doesn't hold true.  However, when in it's proper context, it is quite correct.  HD DVD kept increasing the amount of movies they offered with their players.  The BDA needed to match that offer, eventually.  That's just business.

Toshiba's firesale should have a lot of HD DVD supporters worried.  Just like that article Bill Hunt wrote...the ground is coming up might fast.  What's next $50 HD DVD players?  $25?  I guess HD DVD supporters will mainly be the people buying these $98 or $99 HD DVD players.  Of course, that would mean those sales won't translate into more software sales.

BTW, how many standalone HD DVD players Toshiba said they would sell by the end of this year?  Was it 1 million?  Didn't the HD DVD camp also promise 125 titles for the 4th quarter?  There are only 67 or so announced or out so far for this quarter.  That leaves about 58 titles to be announced within the next 60 days.    That's around 8 titles a week to be released EVERY Tuesday from now!    Did Universal and Paramount just give up on more releases this quarter (or longer)?
