What I don't understand is, if you don't use linking, don't care to ever use it, then why would you even care what goes into the name fields as long as the "Credited As" field is filled in correctly, and everybody who wants linking already understands what that field (Credited As) is for. People who want linking are trying to come to some type of concenus on how to use the 3 names fields. It won't change the Credited As field, wouldn't change the way you see the data.

Since I don't care about linking, I don't use the 'credited as' field, I only use the name field.  That is why I care about what goes into that field.  Beyond that, while I don't care about linking I do understand that other people do.

In addition, unlike some people, I want to help the rest of the community.  I do that by contributing and participating in these forums on a regular basis.  The mere fact that I don't use or care about a feature does not mean I don't understand how it should be used.  Since I do, or at least have an opinion, I share it with the rest of the community.

I mean I can figure out why Skupnit doesn't get it, it's above a 3rd grade understanding, but I gave you more credit than that.

Seems to me that you don't understand how this feature is supposed to work. The name fields link, whether you want them to or not, that's is what they do. Since you are not interested in linking then you should use the correct field for your purpose, the "credited as". Sorry if it screws up what you are used to, but you should at least understand what the fields are and the purpose they serve. Seems to me that you are arguing to perserve your personal perference on how to enter data and not what should go into the correct fields. The program changed with 3.0, sorry.

Seems to me that you don't have a clue as to what you are talking about.  I understand perfectly how this field is supposed to work.  Per the rules, the name in the credits goes into the 'name' field.  The only time we deviate from that rule is when we come across a differently credited name for the same person.  In those cases, the most commonly credited form of the name remains in the name field and the variation is entered into the 'credited as' field.  This is done so that an actor, that has multiple credit variations, will link with all his other credits.

As I said, the mere fact that I don't use...in my personal db...or care about a feature does not mean I don't understand how it should be used.

Once again, it seems to me that you don't have a clue as to what you are talking about.  I have never argued against using this feature.  In fact, I used this feature in my last contribution...'Bangkok Dangerous'...that I submitted on the 14th.  What I have done, however, is argued that this feature should be used in accordance with the rules.  So, the next time you want to assume a condescending attitude, you might want to get your facts straight first.

I agree, Unicus on ALL counts, tlevel pretends to understand far more than he really does, unfortunately. All to easy for one to do when one has NEVER made even so much as a SINGLE Contribution to the database, while criticizing other users who ACTUALLY do try to benefit the Community ad pretending that he knows more than they.

Ken, could you please adjust the filter so it does not change dutch names ending with the suffix "jr.", because we do not add a comma and write it with a capital letter. For example a name like "Johnny Kraaykamp jr." should not be changed to "Johnny Kraaykamp, Jr.".

Correct, but probably very difficult to implement. How is the filter to "know" if a name is Dutch or not? I reckon we'll just have to settle for Credited As...

Neither should it for Norwegian names, but that doesn't really matter. The important thing is that we finally have a standard for how to deal with these suffixes. Adding an exception for Dutch names would lead to further arguments and requests for the same for Norwegian, Swedish and other foreign names too. Suddenly the filter is useless

Not to mention how difficult it would be for the filter to know if an actor is Dutch or American with Dutch name and American style suffix.

The new filter should just add commas to names ending with "Jr." instead of "jr." to avoid this problem. I don't think that's so hard to implent.

I agree - no big deal. As you say the important thing is that we have a standard.

But i guess there is no pleasing some...

I have to say that I'm pleased with the new filter, but not if it adjusts names into something that's not correct.

Well... since Ken has said repeatedly that it is not about a person's "real name" I doubt that this is something he will worry about.

I knew it wouldn't be long before someone uncovered the standardization PROBLEM. But no on e ever wants to listen when they are told? Martiin, there is no adjustment, all Ken could do is remove it and take us back to square one, which is what I would do, but my suggestion tto you is its there now live with it.

I wouldn't even have implemented such a thing because of the problems it causes. But,Standardization was wanted, now we have it with all its shortcomings.

I have to say that I really don't feel this is necessary. I've seen both variants used in various on-screen credits, and on top of that, I feel it's preferable to have a general DVD Profiler standard for entering suffixed names, something that works accross the various regions and localities without dozens of little exceptions which would only make things a lot harder for everyone. The current standard works wonders, and you still get to preserve "Johnny Kraaykamp jr." in the "credited as" field, if that's really what's seen on-screen. I really don't see a downside here.
