I too have taken it to infer exasperation, but it also can convey condescension depending on the arrogance of the statement preceding it.

I agree with you Rick, due to the nature of the forum atmosphere and the lack of implementing the obvious solution to what's causing that atmosphere, it should be removed.

I think exasperation and condescension do often represent how I perceive that particular emoticon when used.  I doubt, however, that removing the emoticon will change the behavior; it will just be expressed in another way.  Of course, that way may help balance the ratio of content to emoticon in some posts.

Again, this is not aimed at anyone -- this is not infrequent on either side of most issues and I don't keep track of who says what; I strive to focus on the content of a post.  And Skip, yes, I see your point about my bias.  On the other hand, that bias serves me well in discerning content both at work and in my personal life and I use it to try and measure my views rather than respond reflexively.

Hm.  Thinking about it, maybe I see emoticons the way I see movie scores:  if the strings are too loud and weepy, if the brass is too robust and grand, if the techno is too... uh, techno then I sense I'm being too overtly directed how to feel.  It distracts me and lessens the impact of the scene or, in this case, the message.

In an effort to try to keep things a bit more civil here can we please remove the  smiley from the emoticon list? It serves no purpose other than to show your disgust with the person it is addressed at. I'm sure that was not the original intent but it has certainly come to that. It only adds to the continuing nastiness of the forum atmosphere.

Even browsing the forums and not really reading anything when you come across a post with          in it it's hard not to know that is yet another attacking post.

I am a huge fan of the smiley in general and personally think we could use more but this one has to go.

You know what's funny? Like Antares, I'm on other boards that don't have the problems this one does because neither the users nor the board owners put up with it and allow it to happen.

There are versions of the rolleye smiley on at least two of the boards I frequent heavily, and I can't remember the last time it was used in a negative way. 99.9% of the time it's used in a mocking or sarcastic way that's humorous.

While I can see your point, and to some extent even agree with you that removing may help, there is a much bigger problem and everyone knows it.

That's not to say that the mod system isn't helping. I think it is. It desperately needs to be less passive aggressive, but it's obvious (to me at least) when things aren't so volatile because someone may or may not be on a mod-imposed vacation.

The point is I definitely agree that the rolleye smiley is overused by jackasses who are too inept to properly debate their point. While removing it may help slightly, the cause of the problem will still be a problem until it goes away.

Again, I never said I was offended. I simply stated removing it would help with the overall atmosphere. Obviously I am one of maybe a few that sees it that way. No biggie. Please feel free to go back to rolling your eyes at each other and degrading each other.

Rick:

As I suggested, but now will say it flat out. I find your comment, in view of the nature and use by you of some very outlandish and insulting emoticons to be...well...hypocritical. It's the only way i can put it. On the one hand you want to claim foul relative to  , but what about the ones that you use so freely and insultingly.<shrugs> You started this discussion without clean hands. And you have yet to address the fact that not only do you not have clean hands, in reality you are the last person to be making such claims, the very last.

Rick, I started to agree with you.  Then I realized that it's not the cute icons that are the problem here.  Its the users and what they're allowed to get away with.  Removing a funny icon won't really solve the real problem.  I'd rather see something done to correct the bad behavior behind the icons.
