My theory is that DVDP+ is tied in with the iPhone app if the app isn't going to be read only.

Keep in mind that software development takes time and we only have one programmer.

Well, considering how big the app is and it only took a year to go from 3.0 and 3.5 (and a massive improvement in that upgrade), he's doing a damn fine job.  That's coming from someone (ETA: Me) who's been a programmer since the early 80's.

As someone who doesn't even own a mobile phone I couldn't give a hoot about the iphone version.

I'm also not fussed about the DVDP+ (or whatever it's called).

I just want 3.6 and the issues with the current system to be fixed/improved.

I second that sentiment Pantheon. I'm curious to know what percentage of Profiler subscribers even have an IPhone... 15%-20% maybe?? And yet how many people on here use and have been begging for an improvement to the display of our online collections? 75%-85%?? I have a feeling that this IPhone App is being perceived as the 'sexy' new feature but is probably catering to a small fraction of the subscribers here while the rest of us who just want to see improvements to the existing product are going to be put to the back burner.

The problem in your logic Kulju is that the program does not have any Major Issues... it is in fact very stable and feature rich...

Whole db structure should be redesigned so that we could have separate databases for film data (with possibity to exeptions if credits doesn't match) and DVD data. At the moment we have ~80 profiles for The Matrix. If some one for example updates Cast & Crew to 3.5 level, we have still 79 profiles to do. It is bad for users and screeners when all changes must be done several times and we never get rid of imdb data with that design.

Cast & Crew linking should be done better, maybe using unique IDs.

Key fields should be redesigned so that we could have separate profiles movies for DVDs that have more than one film on one side etc... just see Collected Feature Requests thread...

I would just love if Ken would put all his efforts to make base program better (online db for the most). I would be happy to pay yearly fee for that.

Those are not major issues - those are a personal desire for the database structure to be fundamentally different... not even close...

While I share many of the desires to see more put into the core Program AND a redesign of the Online, I have to agree with Jon and fundamental redesign is never an easy process. What DVDP+ brings we will find out soon enough and we will with Profiler for the IPhone. I have tried for years to convince myself of the first the usefulness of a PDA formyself, back when Ken first announced a portable and now have spent the last couple of years trying to convince myself of the need for a Smartphone...just can't do it. No, it is not a matter of being too old  , it seems more toy than anything else. I can think of some limted uses for Mobile Internet for myself but that can all be handled in other, less expensive means.

But as I said, I have watched this exact behavior of users for years, first the natives get restless and just want a new toy to play with, then Ken makes an announcement and everybody begins to pant and get impatient. Just be patient, guys, Christmas will come when it comes, not a single solitary day earlier.

Then the fun begins...       did i say fun...oh, I must be sick.

That is not the point, actually. You must see it the other way: how many people own an iPhone...? All those people looking for a way to catalog their DVDs can have their attention directed towards DVD Profiler.

OK, I re-word. The main program have a lot of room for improvement. Worst thing that could happen would be that in next version Ken desides to do some (any) changes to Cast & Crew without redesigning the database first (separate DVD and film data). I'm not telling that this is no brainer to do. That's why I'm concerned that does he have a time to even think about it in middle of DVDP+, I-phone app, mobile version...etc. Problem is that if he changes db design, it effects to those software too which would need a redesign also. If those wouldn't exist, the bar for starting db redesign would be much lower.

Program is great for local use only, but let's face it. Online side have a lot of room for developement.

Well, I guess if your primary concern is to bring in new customers than this is the way to do it. I'm not going to fault the guy for wanting to make money. We all have to eat.    I just hope when this particular project/obsession is done the attention will be turned to his already existing paid subscribers and their concerns.

I have no problem whatsoever paying a new subscription fee to help refill the coffers... provided it is a vastly improved product that has addressed the wants/needs of the collective Profiler community and therein lies my point.... The news and hype of this IPhone app has made every other potential improvement a mere afterthought. I'm happy for the IPhone owners who are obviously rabid in anticipation of this release... but where does that leave the rest of us?

Like ya shin said... this is about expanding the platform, making some money, and hopefully increasing the size of the community... let's all remember... if the normal flow of purchases of the software is not enough to earn a living, more options need to be explored.

Also, think about how many people have iphone / ipod touch... and how many of those people might hear about dvd profiler for the first time through those means... they will most likely come back over here join the community, and purchase the base program...

also... it's quite possible the the iphone app and online plus are tied together... and may launch together or close to each other..

and finally... Skip is absolutely correct... i've been here since 2002 and Ken very consistently does this... and when the new version or product hit... the changes are amazing... so just sit back, relax, and enjoy!

While I don't own an iPhone, and have no desire to own one, I have to agree.  This is the problem with a lifetime subscription...you have to find a way to attract new customers.  An iPhone app is a good way to do that.

Now that I think about it, if the app works on the iPod Touch, I might decide to pick one up.  I have been considering an pugrade for a while and a Profiler app, that works on the iPod, could tip the scales.

Pretty much the same. My current iPod now has a damaged screen. If the iPhone version is compatible with the Touch I might end up buying one so I can carry my collection around with me.

Nobody responded to my earlier post.  I am curious if anyone has anything to add or has an idea of their own.  Thanks

Some features that would be cool:
-Cover Flow w/ touch screen (like i-Tunes)
-Add & Edit DVD's to your library
-Online & PC Back-Up Syncing
-New Release / Wish List Push Notification
-Maybe a way to view Movie Trailers
-A way to include E-mailing list
-Include the functions of the i-Phone such as cut & paste / tilt screen for cover flow / maybe even a camera scan~~like the i-Phone app-Snaptell that would be awesome

I've been a Profiler for years, and also own the mobile version on my Windows Mobile smartphone.  Being also an iPod Touch owner, I can't tell you how nice its interface is; I would LOVE to purchase the iPhone/iPod Touch version.
