Last night I changed my setting to HDR (Medium) and found the upscaling better for TV and other content.

Ha! Now comes the hard part: leaving them alone...

Well I tried. But now the Oppo and 2-way splitter are not playing nice any more. Have reverted to manually plugging cables to preserve UHD going from TV to projector. I do have a push button HDMI switch that I will try later.

Just can't save funds fast enough for a 4K a/v receiver ... somebody in another thread recommended Yamaha. I will add that to my research list. Maybe the wife will lend me a few bucks as an early Xmas present ...

Here is a sketch of my system a/v connections (forgot to add the PC). When I get the Impress version finished, I will replace the hand-drawn diagram with Impress.

After taking a break for a family visit, I'm back working on my 4K setup again. I've now replaced all cables with 4K certified ones, and re-wired to eliminate the need for the HDMI splitter.

Had a long phone call with Oppo support and they confirmed that the Oppo is happiest with only one output device in the chain. We made a couple of tweaks to my setup, but it still takes at least two cycles of handshaking when I switch away from it and then back using the Epson HDMI switcher. This should be a valid scenario. The switcher is connected to only one device at a time - either the TV through a wire, or the projector via wireless.

So, they are sending me some instructions for creating a HDMI handshake logging process to a USB thumb drive, that I can send to Oppo for analysis. If their engineers find anything they can do, they will eventually fold the improvements into a firmware update. Now that's good support. The firmware fixes should definitely support the LG OLED 4K 3D TV.

Finally got the Oppo UDP 205 (Hardware Modified) and hooked it up to my LG Oled 4k 3d 65".
Hard to describe the feeling when I put in my only Dobly Vision disk so far (Spiderman Homecoming) and had the TV come up with Dolby Vision  in the corner.
Both worth the monies.

Down the road now for several months with 4K UHD, I find HDMI switching issues both with my LG 4K UHD TV and my Oppo 203. But with two 4K switch boxes, the problem could actually be in those.

Anyway, my latest 4K gadget is the XBOX One S. If I had it to do all over again, I would have not gotten the Oppo, since the XBOX has a 4K UHD BD drive. Since all the apps I need (Netflix, VUDU, Amazon, YouTube and VLC Player) are enabled in 4K on the XBOX, I am considering eliminating the FireTV and KDLinks boxes to make a simpler configuration.

The upscaling of blu-rays and DVDs to UHD on the Oppo should be better than on the XBox though. So not all is lost.

I hope you can find a way to eliminate those switching issues, although if there was an easy way you would have found it by now, I'm sure.

Thanks for your thoughts. But I am still considering selling off stuff I don't need. The reason I post on this Forum is that I find so much expertise and valid differing perspectives. I'm not so vain as to think I know it all. So I might risk ridicule once again by posting a current diagram of my system to get some feedback. I still have not found a receiver that I like well enough to spend thousands, so my switch boxes are my only way around it. The audio section of my Onkyo is stupendous - I hate to trash it.

By the way, I don't use the Oppo for up scaling DVDs and BDs. Most of them are in Sony megachangers that get up scaled though the Epson projector's 4K UHD switch. It transmits to the projector, and also has a hardwire HDMI cable to the LG HDTV.

My server media content can be played by the Oppo, but VLC player on the XBOX does this as well or better. And the XBOX also has an HDMI input that I use for my ThinkPad for any remaining streaming and HTPC tasks.

So, under consideration for future sale are:
- KDLinks A400 4K UHD Android media player
- Amazon 4K UHD Fire TV
- Oppo UDP 203

You don't need to spend thousands, I bought this receiver about a year and a half ago and it is excellent. I paid $871 with tax and extended warranty, but I see them now for $400-$450. I use all the LG Smart TV options for (Netflix, VUDU, Amazon, YouTube) which automatically upscales everything. I spent many dollars on HDMI cables to have the best throughput possible for my 4K player, PS3, PS4 and Fios cable box. Bottom line is one connection from the receiver to the TV. All the switching is accomplished through the receiver.

Interesting. I do like the Onkyo brand. But 7.2 doesn't support my sound setup. How do you think it would work to use the HDMI sub output to drive my existing receiver, which I am using just for sound now anyway? So the little Onkyo would be in effect, a powered pre-amp?

Maybe I can sell off my Oppo to get some funds towards it. Budget is tight at the moment. I need to do a bit more comparison of the Xbox vs the Oppo for 4K UHD disc playing before going that route.

I agree, the least cables the better.
I have 1 hdmi from Oppo direct to TV for video and 1 hdmi from Oppo to receiver. So far I have had no issues with syning audio/video going this way. Also all of the other equipment are direct to the amp as well. (Chromecast Ultra, Raspberry PI and Sky box).
But I have 8 cables from Oppo to receiver for 7.1 pure audio output. This goes through the Oppo DACs and when viewing Music material, makes a HUGE difference in quality.
My setup is in such a way that I only have to press 1 button on amp remote to change to HDMI or analogue audio from Oppo. So switching back and forth comparing sound is a breeze.
So give the Oppo (203) a chance, and if you read the various reviews around, it will blow the socks off of the X-box. I went for the 205 to get the better DACs.

Ok, I'm remaining open. What you are saying doesn't surprise me. I bought the 203 based on the reputation. But it seems that I might not be able to afford that luxury. I might have to accept the reality of not having the "best" in order to get a workable system that is within my budget. (What messed me up was that I could not sell off my 1080P Epson projector on Amazon. Epson will not allow it. So the money I thought I would have towards a receiver did not pan out. People on Ebay basically are looking for me to give it away.)

As I was leaning closer to picking up that Onkyo unit, I stumbled over the HDCP 2.2 vs 2.0 discussion. That box only has 3 HDCP 2.2 inputs. What I have seen some people say is that going forward, HDCP 2.2 is required for 4K UHD support. I'm wondering how much this is affecting my current installation. I wasn't careful about that because I thought 2.0 was sufficient (and it turns out I was confusing HDMI 2.0 with HDCP 2.0).

And the more recent receivers get very pricey to have all of the inputs HDCP 2.2 compliant.

Going down my list:
LG Electronics 55UH8500 55-Inch 4K Ultra HD Smart LED TV
Quoted from AVS Forum: "...Ultra High Definition (UHD) must have at least one HDMI port that is HDCP 2.2 compliant, as this is required by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA - a U.S. trade organization) of which LG is a member." I assume the OLED version will also be compliant.

Oppo UHD 203
Manual: "In order to view 4K UHD content, ensure that you are connecting the UDP 203’s HDMI OUT (Main) output into an HDMI 2.0 and HDCP2.2 compliant input of the 4K UHD TV" (So am I confusing HDMI with HDCP ? Probably. So I need HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2. I think that's it)

Epson 5040 UBE 4K UHD Projector with wireless HDMI
Nerdtechy review: "...The [projector] HDMI ports both support HDCP 2.2, an important standard for 4k video. The copy protection used in 4k requires this protocol. ..."
B&H Photo Review: "Eliminate cables and clutter while expanding connectivity; the included WirelessHD transmitter has four HDMI inputs that support 4K HDCP 2.2 standards "

HDMI Switch
Manufacturer: "Attention: Please use 18 Gbps AWG26 standard HDMI cable(10-16ft) with 4K/60Hz source.HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2 Compliant, Supports up to Ultra HD 4KX2K/60Hz 4:4:4 8 bit & 4:2:0 10 bit,not just 4Kx2k@24/25/30Hz. "

XBox One S
Various sources: Xbox One S indeed support display of 4K UHD (with the correct protocols) from a 4K UHD disc or from 4K UHD streaming services. It will also upscale 1080P games to 4K resolution. But it does not do native 4K gaming, and pass thru of 4K from its HDMI port is an open question, depending on Microsoft promised updates.

KDLinks Android and Amazon Fire TV streaming boxes
Confirmed via manufacturer specs and Q&A answers. Both support 4K UHD, HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2.

So it would appear that I am good to go (at least in terms of manufacturer claims). I replaced all my cables with what are supposed to be good quality 4K UHD compliant cables. So, I guess there is more to the story than simply specifications. I probably have just too many interconnections for reliable HDCP handshaking (will post diagram soon).

Update: Found one more bad cable. Xbox connection is now stable.
