Quote: In my opinion the best solution would be the development of an online version that offers support across multiple platforms, eliminating the need to write custom applications for each platform. In my opinion focusing on one or two platforms is the wrong decision considering that each platform has only a limited market share and not the same status as Windows on the desktop. If you are serious in targeting the mobile market, you have to consider the following platforms at the moment: - iPhone - Android - Blackberry - Windows Phone 7 (don't underestimate the platform; Microsoft will definitely be in it for the long run) - WebOS (depending on the future HP strategy) - Bada (depending on the future Samsung strategy) - Symbian (just to put everything in perspective: current market share near 50%; it's loosing but still the #1 mobile operating system)
Each of these platforms has its own SDK and you have to rewrite some/many portions of the application for each platform. The easiest solution would be a platform independent web solution, since this limits the development efforts.
Not everybody has unlimited data plan or data plan worldwide, and one of DVD Profiler biggest qualities is being able to be on a store anywhere in the world and consult your collection on your cell phone so you don't buy duplicates or lesser Editions. That's was one of the reasons I bought DVD Profiler over other options. Is there a way to do that with an only online solution - perhaps cache your collection? I use a few programs from another company that started off with just Palm apps, than went to Palm & Blackberry. Now they are moving each of their programs to online cloud version so they support all smart phones. Now instead of all the users of various phones wanting an app for their phones, all the comments are how users don't want their info out on the net. Everything from passwords, medication, cookbooks, and home inventory being out there has caused an outcry from some users. I can see how Ken would take time to look at each platform very seriously, and make sure each is supported one after the other. Of course since we have the website upload already maybe the cloud argument falls apart on it's own. Of course your mileage may vary... | Posted: | | | | I don't wish to sound incredibly ungrateful but I feel quite frustrated that the iPhone app got released before the Android one considering that the loyal and paying Invelos customers voted unanimously for the Android version above and beyond the demand for the iPhone app. Don't get me wrong, I understand that the iPhone is probably easier to develop for (I'm not sureof the in's and out's) and there is a bigger consumer base of iPhone and iPod users, but the loyal customers of Invelos made it pretty clear which of the two we use. I'm just a little baffled and am quite disappointed that there's no Android app available. Sorry if this sounds like a big rant, I love Invelos software and will buy it 'till I die! | | | "What a pathetic excuse for a DVD collection" |

At the time development started, this was probably not the case (was Android even released back then). While being agile and adjusting priorities as you go is generally speaking a good thing, sometimes you actually need to stick with something to finish it - or you end up with a lot of stated projects - bot nothing finished. | | | Regards Lars |

Also, go back and look at post #1. This poll was not started by Invelos or anyone associated with the company. It was started by a user who was curious about what people wanted next. It isn't even close to an official poll. Second, while you're looking at who started the thread, take a good look at when. This thread is only about 7 months old. It was started well after work had begun on the iPhone version. Third, the fact that an iPhone app was already in development when this poll was started automatically discredits the results of the poll. Meaning I'm quite sure many people knew a version was on the way for their platform and didn't choose to take part in the poll since it was meaningless from the very start (some of the earlier posts in this thread point out that same fact). This thread was started 1 month after Ken opened the iOS Feature Requests forum and started this thread. Fourth, there may (or may not) be technical, personal, etc. reasons for Ken to choose one platform over another. He's under no obligation to work on any platform at all. I recall years ago him mentioning his wife got an iPhone. That right there is good enough reason for him to choose the Apple path first. Well I certainly can't predict what type of cell phone Ken has, I'd bet good money it was an iPhone at one point or another. Might still be. If I were in his position, I'd choose the project that would benefit me the most at the end of the day and get to those other platforms when I got to them. Finally, this thread was opened in the non-iOS section of the forums well after there was a place for iOS posts. It's reasonable that a lot of iOS people don't give this area much thought at all. While I can't speak for Invelos, I think those are good reasons to explain the current situation. And I feel those are good enough reasons for you to completely ignore the results of the poll. | | | Get the CSVExport and Database Query plug-ins here. And unfortunately, as much as I prefer DVD Profiler, I left it long ago. Look at some of these posts - people have been practically begging for an Android version for over two years!. And the best indication that the message was even heard was "Ken hinted at it". I came back hoping for some progress, but I see none. This isn't a slam on Ken, but it's clear to me that he has made his choices - so have I. I wish the situation was different. |

That is extremely fair and mature. Wish I saw that attitude online more often. The best you can do is make your desires known. After that it's out of your hands. And clearly Ken didn't choose the direction you wanted. Unfortunate for you and the rest of the Android users (for now). Of course had he gone the other direction, the Apple folks would have threads like this and probably be just as vocal. He was in a no win situation (as long as he chooses to remain the sole developer of course). Hopefully next time you return the situation will be different. | | | Get the CSVExport and Database Query plug-ins here. Create fake parent profiles to organize your collection. |
