I was able to reproduce the issue, then looking for the solution, I used Google, as usual ...

While following the instructions for setting file associations in Windows 7, I noticed that Microsoft used the term "open" the file. Sure enough, in my code, I use the ms verb "play" first, and if that gives an error, then I use "open", and if that gives an error, I use "preview", and so on ...

Changing the order to start with "open" restores vlc player to its rightful position. Now I remember messing with that verb order eons ago to solve some other problem, so I will let V1.82 and V1.83 stand until I make a way for people to be able to set their preference

So go get V1.83.    and thanks for bringing it up. This has been mentioned before, but the light bulb only just came on ...

@martinokle: that was your problem also. When "play" failed on the .ISO, my code moved on to "open",which worked. So you got both an error message followed by the file being played by vlc player. I need to find a way to suppress those error messages. But V1.83 should do it for you.
Thanks for your support.

I'm using windows XP and PowerDVD 10, I entered the line in the notes section and when I click to play I get a pop up window saying "No application is associated with the specified file for this operation" with error "Can't Open / Play!". But my video will start up and play just fine with Power DVD and I tried this on 2 different computers. Any suggestions on how to stop this pop up error? I am using standard version 1.83

- What type of video and filetype?
- What is set in File Associations for that filetype?
- Post the exact line that you have put into notes
- "My video will start up and play ..."  - what do you do to cause that to happen?

I will try to help you if you can give me some more details.

Wow, I did not see this until today. Somehow I missed the changed flag. Which version are you using? I am just about to put up a new version, but it will not change if you are using the latest version.

Let me try your scenario and see what happens. I usually associate ISO with VLC Player - I don't think I have tried Virtual Clone Drive file association (I do use it explicity in my PlayFromDIsk.bat scripts and also I use it automatically in LoadDVD Pro).

Again, sorry for the delay. Just didn't see the post. I was not ignoring it.

Version 1.84 Available:

  • Unofficial V1.83 change to default Play/Retrive verb to "Open" is adopted. If this results in an error, the verb "Play" is used.

  • Longstanding request for shortcut Play/Retrive is now satisfied. The temporary solution in V1.82 has been replaced by "Ctrl-disc#" as the shortcut key, unless there is a problem with that. This works for up to 9 discs. Not sure what to do after that. Suggestions welcomed.

  • @mlutz99: Edited: I see you were using V1.83. It should hsve worked because your scenario worked for me in V1.84, and that part of the code did not change. On my system, when VCD is associated with an ISO, it loads the ISO and PowerDVD pops up to play the virtual drive.

Just upgraded to 1.84 and your correct it didn't change my issue, Yes VCD loads the ISO and starts playing with PowerDVD but I still get the pop up "Can't Play/Retrieve" window and I just click to close it. It works just annoying to have to have this pop up every time

Ok, it seems impossible to get this right for all systems and configurations. Only option now is to suppress the error message, or perhaps display it only if all methods fail.

Just checked my code while writing this post and discovered that in fact I had already put in most of that message suppression code. I must have gotten distracted because I see where I was just one program change away from implementing it. The code was almost finished.

So, if you want to give it a try before I publish V1.85, PM me an email address and I'll send you an advance copy.

    Version 1.85 Available:

  • "Play/Retrieve" attempts to play a file from the hard drive using several alternative techniques in succession. This sometimes resulted in an error message even when the operation was ultimately successful. Now the error message is displayed only if all attempts fail.

*********************** Announcement - Please Do Not Quote - Thanks ***********************
    Version 2.0 Available:

    New features:
    - Particpates in a/v Automation System.
    - Sony VGPXL1Bx disc access is faster and more reliable

    LoadDVD a/v Automation:
    - Run local automation sequences
    - Can be a client to a/v DashBoard
    - Can load a/v automation configuration files, but cannot edit them
    - Includes the command line utility - runaction.exe
    - Automation can be turned on and off

    Quickstart:
(Note: in all these examples, do NOT actually enter the quotes unless explicity directed to)
    - Put "[SAY] Hello World" in the Location field of any profile disc. Save the profile and click Play/Retrieve or the disc icon. If, for some reason, MS text-to-speech is not turned on, try "[MSG] Hello World". Both of these automation commands should work immeditately, out of the box. If that works, next try "[SAY] %overview%". Heh heh, cool huh?
    - Next level, put "[PLY] filepath" into the location field, for example, "[PLY] c:\trailers\favoritemovie.mpg", save and click. Getting the picture? (literally)
    - Next Level, put "action" in the Location field and then put the following into the Notes field: "<action name="disc1">[SAY] Hello World</action>"  (use the correct disc number). Save the profile and click - you should get the same result as before. Getting even clearer now? Stop now and take a look at the User Guide at all the commands available. Go ahead and experiment.

    More advanced examples:
    - Play a DVD from a supported Sony Changer
      (1) Put the word "action" in the location field.
      (2) Put the following action seqence defintion into the Notes field:
            <action name="disc1">
[DEV] CX995V1 [KEY] Pause [DLY] 500 [KEY] Stop [DLY] 6000
[KEY] Display [DLY] 300 [KEY] RightArrow
[DLY] 300 [NUM] %slot% [DLY] 500 [KEY] Enter [DLY] 35000
[KEY] Display [DLY] 300 [KEY] Display [DLY] 300
            </acion>
    Quote:
The DefaultAutomation.xml file has definitions for the Sony CX995V1 changer. Key captions, such  as "Play" are stored with their corresponding Pronto IR codes. The a/v automation engine retireves these codes and sends them to the USBUIRT USB-connected blaster. The sequence shown is the a/v automation equivalent of the built-in LoadDVD IR support for the changer. Using a/v automation, you can now custom tailor the codes, delays and sequencing to best match your equipment and home environment. To use legacy built-in support, simply put "cx995v1" in the Location field, and the disc slot# in the Slot field. This is the way LoadDVD worked before V2.0, and is still supported.

    - Set up a disc to sen an IR code to a special device, such as a light.
You have somehow either captures the Pronto code or found it on the internet.
Simply put "[IRC]" followed by the codes directly in the Location field of the disc.
          Example: [IRC] 000000670000001500600018001800180030001800300018003000 ...

    - Use VLC Player to play a trailer from the hard drive
In the Location field (no quotes) put: "[PRG] vlc [ARG] c:\trailers\%profileID%\trailer.avi"
    Quote:
The word "vlc" is pre-defined in the DefaultAutomation.xml file as "c:\program files\videolan\vlc\vlc.exe". Everything after [ARG] is passed to the program as parameters. LoadDVD fills in %profileID% with the profileID (UPC.locality) of the currently selected DVD. Other programs can be defined in the automation configuration file. In LoadDVD, you must do that manually.

    Default Devices Supported:
Here is a collapsed view of "DefaultAutomation.xml" that is included with LoadDVD. You can edit this file manually, or use the results from LoadDVD Pro or a/v DashBoard editors.

    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="windows-1252" ?>

    Version 2.05 Available

    - New menu item: Tools\Automation\Run ClipBoard Action

This means that you can create any action sequence according to the a/v Automation System user guide, copy the string into the clipboard, and use the new menu item to execute it. This is handy for testing and other purposes, such as another program or script that generates some automation into the clipboard. Note that disc information is always obtained from disc 1.

    Version 2.08 Available

    - Imporved IP communications during automation tasks
    - Special support for "Automation Profiles"

    To create an "automation profile":

    (1) Start with a Manual Profile that has one or more discs defined
    (2) Add whatever picture is desired as cover art
    (3) Define (or use prevously defined) a MediaType = "Automation" - optionally assign Icon and banner
    (4) Define custom category = Automation - optionally assign Icon

    (5) If the profile is in Automation category and also has MediaType = Automation, LoadDVD will perform whatever automation is found within the first disc of the profile whenever the profile is selected. The automation can also be triggered by using the appropriate LoadDVD disc icon. See the a/v Automation User Guide.

    (6) If the profile has a different MediaType and/or is not located in the Automation category, the automation will only be run by clicking the LoadDVD disc icon. It may be useful to not include the first profile in the sorted list of the Automation category, in order to prevent the automation from running whenever the category is selected.

Following is a screen shot of some profiles I set up to change the channels on my FIOS STB, and to turn on/off overhead lights. Notice the LoadDVD disc Icon also displayed, next to the MyTools icons for Lights On/Off, showing the full range of automation tools at your disposal.

As an example, here is the action sequence that I put in the Location field for switching to the HBO Network. The action sequence first announces the channel change over the PC speaker, then sends the infrared signals to the FIOS STB. "[DEV] Cable/TV [SAY] HBO Network [NUM] 899". The infrared commands are saved in the autiomation XML table under the device name "Cable/TV".

    Thanks for your support.

Yes, and also 3.7. I see that somehow I neglected to explicitly say that in this thread, although it is implied in the V1.85 announcement of the addition of shortcuts. Aside from that, you can briefly scan the various announcement posts to see what has been added recently.

Good luck. And if you are so inclined, try out LoadDVD Pro. It has a few extra features, plus it gives me a little income to help pay for web site hosting, etc. (Sorry for the advertisement!  )
