I'd recommend shopping around for a region-modded Oppo. The price listed in your link seems a bit excessive compared with the standard player.
Where you ought to see a difference in picture quality is especially in the upscaling of blu-rays and DVDs.

especially for 3D

3D is dead, there is no 2017 TV model with 3D anymore.

Wrong... just look at the Panasonic 2017 line-up.

The Panasonic EX750 is the only model in the entire range to support 3D. It uses active shutter, ouch. Demand for 3D has dwindled to the point where all other manufacturers just don’t bother any more.

Stop knocking 3D. If you don't like it, say so and be done with it. Let those of us who do like it alone.

From what I can tell, 3D has settled into a niche. They've given up on putting it in every home, but they are selling hard to people like me who buy 1 or 2 3D movies a month.

Don't tell me what I have to do.

You live in your own world, I'm fine with that, but all the TV manufacturers "do not like" 3D anymore. Tell me, how do you want to watch a 3D movie without a 3D TV?

You buy one.   Just so you know, there will be some higher end TVs with 3D.

I just discovered that I actually have a 4K UHD set (LG 55UH8500). Yes, I know ("you big dummy"), how could I not know that?    I will spare you the details. I always felt the picture quality was outstanding, but I just forgot that I had "4K". I never bought any 4K material for it.

So, I ask if anybody can suggest a really cheap / free way for me to easily note the difference that obviously has not been apparent to me up to this point? Rent a 4K VUDU movie? YouTube (any true 4K content there?)

Thanks in advance.

Edit: Found some YouTube stuff. I wonder if it is really 4K.

Oh, now finding a bunch of stuff, including some marked iPhone (4K ????) - man am I behind the times ...

Yes, the YouTube stuff is 4K, but if your TV does not support the right codec YouTube 4K HDR clips may not be displayed in HDR. There are many non-HDR 4K clips on YouTube as well.

Netflix and Amazon have some 4K HDR material as well, if you have the right subscription for it.

And there are demo clips on the web. Search for 4K HDR demo.

Edit: if you don't feed your TV 4K material, it can only upscale to 4K and you won't see the real difference. Viewing distance is also important for seeing the difference.

Aha! Thanks very much. Will do. I discovered a "stats for nerds" button on the LG YouTube app. Seems like the what I am watching is the real deal.

Quite a few demo clips here:

Download them, put them on a USB stick or hard drive, and connect stick or drive to the TV.

Ok, I am now officially spoiled. The Iceland, Maui and some others - gasp!

But all that resolution seems a bit wasted on only 55" (!) screen. Will start a savings campaign now for a new projector. Next year ... maybe ...

With your 55 inch screen, viewing distance is key to really see the difference. Try 6 feet, 8-9 max.

OK, I was at about 10 feet, on a slant. I will try 6 feet directly in front.

Suicide Squad trailer rocks!
