So, I'm in the position where I have a fair amount of DVDs (approaching 500) and now my significant other tells me that when we move to our new apartment, she would appreciate it if our DVDs were inconspicuously hidden away. I'd prefer some sort of furniture like a cabinet over binders. It'd be really great if a single unit could hold all my DVDs with a bit of room for growth.

I've seen a few closeable/lockable cabinets in the Sky Mall, and at www.cdrackshoppe.com. Anybody have any suggestions of places to buy such DVD storage from online?

I keep all of my discs in a couple of changers. Don't really need the cases - especially with DVD Profiler!

Okay, let me clarify then that I don't see the point in a DVD changer. I really don't mind getting up after 2 hours to change discs and I'm not willing to spend hundreds for a DVD changer, especially when my 360 is my DVD player. Besides, the largest DVD changer I've seen holds 400, which is not large enough for all my discs. I like having the cases and boxes. I just don't want to have to look at them all the time. Thanks for the effort though.

I don't consider changers a viable option either. With my collection at it's current level, I would need 9 or 10 400 disc changers, too much money in electronics and not practical.

For collection over 500 dvd there no good way to hide it.

The best is to keep them in a safe place. small locker.
(ps. dont move close to a drug effected area & not next door to a pawn store) LOL

Keep the only you want to watch close to your 360 and store away the rest

I got a local furniture manufacturer to build me a solid timber low-line cabinet to house my amp, STB, DVD player etc. and designed it so it had 6 huge drawers (3 each side) to contain DVDs.

It was a bit more expensive than buying flat-pack furniture, but looks great. The only problem is that when we first bought it, it had so much space I couldn't believe we would ever run out of room.

Yeah right. Now all 6 drawers are chockers, and I have shelves at the back of the lounge room which just house TV series, documentaries, and music DVDs.

You will never find a solution which will be big enough and future proof. Sorry...

8-)
cheers

Hi

I use the Disc gear selector 100 Here, it comes with a literature album to keep all the covers in. I have used the personalize section in DVD profiler to keep track of where they are. eg location: Disc Gear 'a' Slot '1' etc.

When I sync my collection with my PDA all i need to do is select the dvd I want to watch and the info is right there.

I have 3 all together, 1 for Music CDs and 2 for DVDs, although I will bee needing to buy a new one soon as I'm running out of room.

Hope this helps

Richard

ps, if you live in the UK the best place to get them is from QVC.

Thanks for the tips, all. I'm thinking what I may do is get a closeable/lockable cabinet that holds 400 - 500 and then keep the rest (probably ungainly box sets and the like) in some other location like in one of my old shelves in another room. Thanks again.

I custom built a shelf out of 1x8's and 1x2's that is 16 feet wide and 12 feet tall holds all of my 1384 DVD's and has room for another 300 to 400 depending on case format/boxset size. Will post picture once i take one. I'm also thinking of making removable panels on it so it would look like a wall when panels are on. New Release Tuesday is my addiction any treatment available for that?

I have cheapo Ikea shelves with doors I am halfway through the third one, here is the tip though, I buy half width cases and move all the keep case ones into those together with the cover art. This way they still look OK and take up a little over half the space.

This site offers a great alternative.

I discard the cases for these:

Talk about a space saver. About 50 DVD's in 10 inches. The quality is superb. The sets come with trays;

I opted to go the case route;

Btw: Their customer service has always been top notch with me. I have had 2 instances with poor handling by the delivery company and customer service has usually sent out a replacement - same day.

I am not sure you would consider my solution really "inconspicuous".  I had a friend with a really good woodworking shop make me an oak storage unit.  7' tall, 6' wide, 5' deep, 7 large vertical drawers, each with 9 shelves.  Holds about 3000 DVDs, give or take.

There are some pictures out on flickr under the tag DVD Storage.

Then again, it is a massive piece of furniture.  It doesn't look bad in a very large room.  But it does weigh in at about 1300 pounds and it took 4 burly guys who are roadies in a band to move it.  Heck, just the sliders in the close-up weigh 50 pounds a pair and there are 2 pairs per drawer.  And I had to take out the sliding glass door to the patio to get it in the house because it didn't fit in any doors, and forget about moving it through any halls or stairways.  And now that it is time to replace the carpet, I am seriously thinking about just cutting around it so I don't have to move it again.  On second thought, you are probably better off with just about ANY solution other than this one....

I have all my CDs in five drawers of two of these from Can-Am. The sixth drawer contains all my pre-1929 production year DVDs. They are pricey, but the quality is impossible to beat. Many color selections available.
If it wasn't for bad taste, I wouldn't have no taste at all.

Damn that's expensive, $60 for something that holds 50 movies. Then you still ether have to find room somewhere for the empty cases, toss them, or resell em on eBay.

KFelon – While I can agree that at a dollar a sleeve it is not the most economical, when you can compress 50 DVD’s into the space of 10 it quickly becomes one of the most “Inconspicuous DVD Storage” ideas for your collection. And as my Wife agreed to a 55” Mitsubishi Rear projection TV on the ground, and a 9’ Front projection screen that motors down from the ceiling in front of it, along with all my speakers and shakers, she drew the line at my growing collection of DVD’s mounted on the walls. Myself, I would have displayed them from end to end but alas, I think I made out on the deal. Plus this keeps the Living room looking tidy, the Wife happy, and me basking in Movie Nirvana. (I do also have one shelf that I keep my Box Sets on for display in my office)

As far as the empty cases, most are generic and I donate them to local churches to use for mailing members DVD’s of services when they can’t attend. I suppose I could even get them to write a donation receipt for tax purposes but I don’t. Few cases are special enough to keep but those and any case sleeves I put in a box and store in the attic.
