You want them to list the names of the cast for who they're adding birth years?

Think they missed the 'only add the birth year if necessary'. I'd vote no with a reason that the birthdate is not to be added as standard.

Edit

As James got in the way    This was in response to Charleybaak's post with all the names listed with birth years

That sounds reasonable.

I too would see it as a misunderstanding.

I would also make a mental note of the contributor for future reference

I want some documetation, don't just throw it up ther and expect me to buy it. I have previously stated what standards I apply to this kind of thing, I wil NOT just put it up there and expect ANYONE to accept it just upon my word. In the case of John Williams I believe there are about 35 DIFFERENT ones in the history of cinema, so which one is the user referring to and what proof does he provide that he has it right.

What I want to know, James is if you are interested in building an accurate database why do you resist providing sources when this kind of thin is involved, be it a name change, birthday whatever. Just provide some documentation.

You might need to re-read my question. I asked what you wanted. I didn't say what I wanted or what I didn't want.

Breathe.

I just wanted to know what level of documentation you wanted. Specifically, I was just curious what "to back up which of the many names he was referring to" means to you. Are you asking him to list the actor names in the contribution notes? That's what it appeared to me to mean, but that might not be what you meant. So that's why I asked a question.

Details:

I have previously stated what standards I apply to this kind of thing

This birth year thing is new and I've not seen the discussion yet on documenting them. I've feared the discussion was coming but haven't seen it yet.

How would you like a user to tell you which one they're referring to? I don't understand what you want him to say (assuming these birth years were even necessary, as Lithurge points out, which they don't appear to be...).

I do explain, verify and document my contributions and don't appreciate your implication that I do not.

Well we might as well get it out there

Just what documentation is acceptable to everybody for adding YOB. We should probably get the discussion going thenget some Invelos input and or a poll.

Unfortunately this is not something we can some up with using our own data, as Ken feels we can do for the common name. We will have to use an outside source. I hope it isn't going to take an email or a phone call to the person to get confirmation like our favorite helicoptor pilot.

Thoughts?

EDIT: freggin James....

For a "Mr. Cellophane" you're sure pretty visible lately

As I have stated previously, whatever the documentation I might select, Rick, I will provide a minimum of two independent locations for the data. I would say, of course ideally the person's own website, in which case, one might be acceptable. TWSNBN   would be OK by I would definitely NOT provide it as a SOLE source of data. But I am open to any and all possibilities.

Here is my question regarding this issue:

What should be done when 2 actors have the same first and last name, and there is no middle name, middle initial, or birth year available for either actor?

WHAT??????

You mean Amazon isn't going to sue if they find out that we're copying the copyrighted year of birth from IMDb.

I cannot believe you would suggest such a reckless course of action!

Hal:

"You know I don't like the idea AT ALL. I haven't yet run into a need for the BY, when I do I will take a detailed look at it and try and sort it out. I am very careful about these matters as you know. I have eveWhat is “fair use”?
Fair use is primarily intended to allow the use of copyright-protected works for commentary, parody, news reporting, research and education. However, fair use is not an exception to copyright compliance so much as it is a “legal defense.” That is, if you use a copyright-protected work and the copyright owner claims copyright infringement, you may be able to assert a defense of fair use, which you would then have to prove. Whether a certain reproduction or other use of a copyright-protected work is considered fair use is not specifically set out in the Copyright Act. As such, you must determine, based upon the factors in the Copyright Act, whether that particular act may be considered fair use.

"Fair use considers:

  1. The purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for nonprofit, educational purposes.
  2. The nature of the copyrighted work.
  3. The amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyright protected work as a whole.
  4. The effect of the use on the potential market for or value of the copyright-protected work.
n been searching copyright.com to see what they might have to say."

At the same time, if we make documentation overly difficult then the data can never be used. The important things is the documentation, I have stated my own standards and I am open to any suggestions that people may have. We know from past discussions how difficult this is and I wll report on my own finding as I continue moving through titles.

I would vote NO period.

PM the user and try to explain it to him. And if necessary, immediately correct the Contribution

For Instance

Josh Nelson in The World Outside (not in the database, and I dont own it, but its on my list of films to check out)

and Josh (sometimes, but not always, credited as Joshua) Nelson who has appeared in Law and Order among other various horror films.

Its bound to happen with some of the more obscure actors who's information isnt out there.  Best work on a solution now while the database is small than try to get it figured out after the fact
