This thread is a great idea. It has already helped me straighten out several profiles and actor BYs. And this whole Hoffmann vs Hoffman thing...need I say more.

Thank you GreyHulk.

Lisa Gerrard (1961).

All entries in the database (checked with CLT) are for the same Lisa Gerrard.

Almost all of them are Composer or Songwriter credits, except:
- "as Herself" in "Sanctuary: Lisa Gerrard"
- "as Georgina" in "El niño de la luna"

You know it is....what we should do is also make an "Approved/Accepted Common Name thread"  Where it just contains all the user accepted common name changes.  One thread for the ending results.

Same here.  I cleaned up about half a dozen invalid BYs.

Now only if we could agree to submit BYs for the lesser-known instances, rather than a gazillion entries for Larry David to accommodate the one credit that almost no one else has heard of.

I'm tying to figure out the logic in doing BYs for only "lesser-known instances". I guess you mean lesser known actors/crew members.
Are you saying that only BYs for the lesser-known actor should be contributed instead of the well-known actor/crew member?

Problem there is that it's very likely that a BY will never be known for the lesser-known actor/crew member. but will be known for the well-known actor/crew member.
So what if it's just one credit? Are we going to set a bench-mark that an actor/crew member must meet before a BY is required? Is 10 enough? Or 50? Or 100?

I think that there SHOULD be better governance over how and when Birth Years are used.  Personally, I would strongly prefer that we reserve birth years for lesser known cast/crew members only, because it's more likely than not that 90% of users are not going to have the OTHER Adam West or Larry David in their profiles.

I agree with Cubby here.  THe lesser known actor is the one most likely to not have a BY we can find.

Also people use the BY's to help link credits properly.  Those that are doing it do care if it is 1 credit or 100

We also need to remember that Ken is working on designing a new cast/crew system to help with this issue.

I'd like that too, but that would just add another grey area in the contribution process: define "lesser known" (no, it's not always obvious).  That's why utilizing any known birth year is a solidly working system for differentiating between people with identical names.

And I bet that these BY's as well as the thread about needed but not yet found BY's will be very helpful to him.

Marshall Bell 1942...

I know the 1945 one is in the invalid list.

But also 1942 exists in the DB.  I went through the CLT and by just skimming I don't see a need for the 1942 one.  In fact many that are credited for Marshall Bell 1945 are really Marshall Bell 1942

can someone check and see if what I am seeing is correct?

MANY BY's are not documented, that does not maked it invalid on it's own since a BY can be approved without being placed there.  I have retractively redone the documentation on many BY's so they are in the thread.  To be an invalid BY you have to do the research to determine if it is truly not needed.  Have you done that as well?

A quick scan in CLT have learned me that there's no other Ron Perlman with that same name in the MainDB. Checked titles Invelos MainDb with IMDb and they correspond with each other.
In IMDb is no other Ron Perlman to find so I can conclude that BY is not neccesary nor allowed according to the rules.

Alun Armstrong
I always see a 1946 BY for Alun Armstrong pop up and have never seen any documentation that it is necessary. I went through 41 pages of CLT results for Mr. Alun Armstrong and they are all for the same actor (source for his filmography: www.alun-armstrong.net/). Furthermore, he is the only Alun Armstrong on IMDb. There is a soccer/football player named Alun Armstrong but he has not appeared in anything as far as I know.

Jamie Bell
I was recently confused on whether I should remove Jamie Bell's BY from my collection since it is both in the documented thread and invalid here. I went through all of the CLT results for Jamie Bell and found 2 credits for another Jamie Bell (BY unknown), so the 1986 BY may still be necessary. Thanks for posting what we were discussing in this thread as well.  I was going to do it but I never found the time.

But it does look like Jamie Bell 1986 is a valid BY after all based on Rizor's research and some things I found

Jamie Bell 1986 has a web site and no listing of those titles in the filography

http://jamie-bell.com/information/filmography

If you look in Rizor's link you will see two titles from the CLT that are not in his filmography and are not Jamie Bell 1986
