| | Posted: | | | | A download service is far from reality in my opinion. Assuming that a HD movie is 25 GB, that'll take quite some time to download. I have a fiber optic connection that that would take me hours to download. Streaming is currently not feasable except on the most fastest connections. |

At this time it's with an HD DVD player, but at some point this year I expect to pick up a Blu-ray player and start enjoying those titles as well. | | Posted: | | | | Well, I am proud to say that I am one of those sitting it out... Last time this happened, I dropped almost $1,000 on a betamax machine. Within a few weeks of my purchasing it, I realized that I had made a mistake when the rental stores (they were all mom & pop type shops around me back then) stopped carrying new betamax movies. It really does not matter who has the better product or more movies available, etc., it is all marketing and the way you bundle it. Right now with the price of HD-DVD players being around $200 and up, they should be killing Blu-Ray (players are at least $100 more-and don't include the Samsung garbage player), but HD-DVD does not seem to be spending the money on advertising and people only see the biggest movies going either Blu-Ray or both. This time, I will just sit back and wait for someone else to decide who wins the wars.  C' y'all when the war is over or the dual player prices come down. | | | | Last edited: by t001z |

| | Posted: | | | | From my experience, a HD title is still far superiour than an upscaled DVD. Even my son who is a staunt "DVD is good enough!" user realized that when watching the opening Disney logo on a recent HD title compared to the DVD version, he could see a lot more stars/dust during the logo on the HD version.
Upscaling is still stretching. Stretches it better than a standard DVD player but still stretching. |

I have the new Oppo that converts to 1080p on my new TV and an older Oppo that converts to 1080i on an older TV. Since I'll provably never have need for a screen size larger than 46 in., I'm happy as things are. plus... You also have to take into account the audio, which to me can make a good movie great. Even a standard 5.1 track on either Blu or HD sounds much better than it's DVD counterpart. I am impressed at almost every movie I watch. My guess is they are less compressed or something. Whatever the reason there is a noticeable difference.  I can't wait till I get a new receiver and can take advantage of the HD sound formats.  I'm sure it will be incredible. |

Once I got HD cable, I really wanted HD movies next. Then I got HD-DVD with my XBox I couldn't go back to regular DVD and soon got a PS3 for Blu-ray just so I had everything covered.

Availability of product. The 400 available titles in the US (and probably 200 or so in the Netherlands/Europe) are basically your standard blockbuster. Then there's the ridiculous outdated region coding for bluray, which means that I still have to keep my standard dvd-player. If I can't play half my collection on either a European or US blurayplayer, then it's not even an issue whether I should upgrade or not. Yes, HD-DVD is region free, but again the severe lack of catalogue that I would be interested in buying makes me stay happy with my dvds. A lot of people have 3 players now, just to be able to play every format they want. I just want 1 player. And if that means that I don't get to "experience" highdef, so be it. |
